Was just getting ready to call you Paul, to touch base as we had been doing in the last several years. I am so saddened to know he no longer will be smiling with me through the phone, and that we never had the chance to have that long overdue visit. 

Nina, we never met but as Paul's first cousin Nancy, I am sorry for the loss of your husband...such a wonderful man, such a wonderful friend...

I taught at a church Sunday school with Paul for several months, way back in the early seventies, in Leominster.  I admired his gentleness, spirituality and intelligence.  I have not seen him since, but when I read his obituary, my mind went back thirty years and it  seemed like last week. Long conversations over breakfast at Broadways in Worcester on Sundays and many hours on the phone, my heart told me to at least write a bit about my chance meeting with this gentle soul.  My sympathy to all of you, family and friends, who knew him far better than I.

He met my daughter in the Whole Foods parking lot. He was so kind and interested. We had a long talk. I always looked forward to seeing him at the office building and his warm smile and wave.

I am so sorry that I was not able to say goodbye to him.  I will always remember what a brilliant conservationist he was.  How considered his point of view was.  And how wonderful it made me feel to be able to make him laugh.

I did not know Paul as an adult but he holds a prominent place in my childhood memories.  He was my friend, a neighbor, my first crush, my camp mate at CampBobwhite/Bobolink,and my Confirmation dance date.  He came from a special family which my family knew as friends and neighbors.  Eleanor, Marsha, Lisa, and Joshua (and of course Nina, who I never had the pleasure of meeting): my sincere condolences.  I will never forget Paul.

I've felt very close to Paul since meeting him 30 years ago. He had that rare ability to seem as if he is sitting on a quiet mountain top and with that great perspective, compassionately yet articulately appreciating all around him. I've always felt inspired with his insight, sense of irony, wit, calm outer demeanor, and passion for understanding his world. I savor the many conversations we had and sad not to have more. I will deeply miss this complex, very self-aware, kind and loving Paul.

So many years ago in the neighborhood in Worcester, and then more recently over our breakfasts in Newton, Paul struck me as one of the kindest, most thoughtful, gentlest souls.
