Since 2016 Shirley was a resident of Boston at the Susan Bailis Assisted Living. She was an active participant in the social functions offered there until COVID restrictions were enacted.
Shirley grew up in Dorchester, and lived in Allston and Watertown. Shirley attended Dorchester School for Girls and the Museum of Fine Arts School. She was an accomplished artist and her family are privileged to own her paintings and pen and inks, both large and small. She would often pen sketches on greeting cards and note paper, enhanced with good wishes and witty quips.
Shirley worked at Mass Antiques Co-Op, in Waltham, for many years. Not only did she work there, but she was a mainstay. She knew every customer coming through the door and what they were searching for. She was well known in the local antique industry and was well liked by both dealers and customers. She had a vast knowledge of antiques and collectibles and loved sharing her knowledge with others.
She had an artist's eye when it came to merchandising and always made herself available to the dealers in the shop to help with setting up their displays.
Shirley is survived by her cherished son, Brian, of Portland, Oregon. Shirley was the daughter of Ida Goldman and Benjamin White. Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Paul Carter and the cherished sister of her late siblings: Albert White, Joseph White, Saul N. White, and Normie Gerber Herd.
