

Zina Merlis, 98, a cherished mother and grandmother, was the true heart of her family. She passed away on January 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering devotion.
Early Life and Resilience
Born in the former USSR, Zina grew up amid the turmoil of the Second World War. As a young girl in Belarus, she endured the horrors of the Holocaust. Despite these harrowing experiences, she refused to let adversity define her. Instead, she emerged from those dark times with remarkable strength and resilience.
A Life Built on Courage
In 1947, Zina married Lazar, himself a survivor of the Minsk Ghetto. Together, they faced and overcame numerous obstacles, including the difficulties of post-war life and widespread anti-Semitism within Soviet society. Zina worked as a financial officer at a construction company, demonstrating her dedication and perseverance throughout her career.
A New Beginning
In 1988, Zina and her family made the difficult decision to emigrate to America. Leaving behind everything they knew, she hoped for a brighter future for her children. This courageous act exemplified her selflessness and commitment to her family’s well-being.
Legacy of Love
Zina was a constant source of strength and inspiration for those around her. Through her love and devotion, she held her family together during challenging times. Her unwavering compassion touched countless lives, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
She leaves behind son, Michael, (Ronli), daughter Sophia (Lev) and grandsons Jason, Ryan and Mark.
Funeral services will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 1668 Beacon Street, Brookline on Friday, January 9, 2026 at 1:00pm. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will take place at Crawford Street Cemetery, West Roxbury.
