With deep love and eternal gratitude, we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Germelina Arreola, affectionately known as “Erling” or “Lena”. She peacefully departed on March 5, 2025, at the age of 95, surrounded by love at Calvary Hospice, Brooklyn Hospital.
Born on September 27, 1929, in Naguilian, Philippines, Lena was the heart of our family—a woman of boundless generosity, resilience, and love. She grew up in the Philippines, where she developed the deep sense of responsibility and care which defined her life’s mission.
In August 1957, she married George Arreola, and together they built a life in Brooklyn, New York, raising three wonderful children: Mary Jean, Catherine (her devoted caregiver since 2008 along with her companion Phillip Musacchio), George, and our family lion Myles. She was also a cherished grandmother to Sierra Jordan, who carries on her legacy of love and strength.
Lena was a devoted provider, often working three or four jobs at a time as a domestic worker to ensure her children had every opportunity to thrive. She was a hero in every sense, selflessly helping her family immigrate to the U.S. after World War II devastated the Philippines, giving them a future filled with hope and possibility.
Above all, Lena’s greatest legacy was her love, expressed most beautifully through her cooking. Whether feeding family, friends, or neighbors, her meals were more than food—they were an offering of warmth, comfort, and care. She had a sharp sense of humor, a heart that never hesitated to give, and a spirit that anchored our family through generations.
She will forever be remembered as the beloved matriarch who paved the way for us all, a woman of unwavering strength and devotion to her family. Her love was endless, and her presence will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Rest in love, Mom. Your legacy lives on in every meal shared, every loving tease, and every act of genuine kindness. We love you infinitely, peace until.
