She was born to the late Sebastiano Calcagno and Sebastiana DeMarco, February 14, 1932, in Aidone, Sicily, Italy.
She married the late Leonardo Mascara in 1952, and they moved from Sicily to Brooklyn, NY in March 1953. Giovanna is survived by two children: daughter Renee Mascara D’Ugo of Staten Island, NY and son Dominic Mascara of Brooklyn, NY, daughter-in-law Donna Mascara and son-in-law Guido D’Ugo. She is also survived by six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and good friends. She was predeceased by her husband Leonardo in 1998.
Giovanna, who was the youngest of four siblings, began working, as thousands of other Italian immigrants at the time, as a seamstress apprentice in New York City’s Garment Center. As she developed into an accomplished dressmaker, she was given her first opportunity to work as a sample maker for designer Bill Blass and continued as a sample maker for Elsa Martinelli, and Don Sayres. She enjoyed being part of New York City’s Fashion Week and working closely with dressing the designer’s runway models. She passed her appreciation of fashion to all her children and grandchildren.
She was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind great memories. As her health declined, she remained as feisty and headstrong as ever.
A visitation for Giovanna will be held Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 8:15 AM to 9:15 AM at Cusimano & Russo Funeral Home, 2005 West 6th St, Brooklyn, NY 11223. Funeral Mass to be celebrated Saturday, 9:45 AM at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church, 2001 Bay Ridge Parkway, Brooklyn, NY. Interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.
