Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2
Mary Regis McLoughlin, humble and gentle servant of God, died peacefully on September 23, 2022, at Methodist Hospital. Beloved by generations of extended family, Mimi returns to her loving parents who predeceased her, Peter P. and Vera (Dobby) McLoughlin.
Born on April 7, 1938, Mimi was a lifelong resident of Park Slope and a parishioner at St Francis Xavier for her entire adult life. After being graduated from College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Class of 1960, Mimi began a long and rewarding career in the service of her faith; she retired after a long tenure with the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in New York.
At St. Francis Xavier, where she was the fourth-generation of her family to attend, Mimi served on the Liturgy Committee, the Altar Guild and the Parish Council. Her greatest joy was found through her ministry as a member of the choir. As recounted in the St. Francis Xavier bulletin’s story about the church’s 100th anniversary service, Mimi recalled that “three generations of my cousins came from afar to celebrate the occasion with me. Two of the little children amused themselves by waving to me up in the choir loft. Seeing no stairway, they were deeply concerned about how I would get down from there. Their grandmother told them: ‘She flies.’ On that great day, I could have!”
Mimi was the family historian and genealogist, and took great pride in not only tracing the histories of the McLoughlin and Dobby families, but in sharing that knowledge and love of family with her innumerable cousins, their children, and their children’s children. For decades, every family gathering in “the country” (which was any place other than Brooklyn) was complete only when Mimi, impeccably dressed and surrounded by smiling young faces, shared a story she had learned about the family’s arrival in America and ongoing contribution to the civic, cultural and religious life of Brooklyn.
Mimi’s kindness will be remembered and celebrated by generations of loving family. The memory of her extraordinary grace will serve always as a reminder to be patient and bear with one another in love. Apre-mass gathering will take place Monday at 10am at St. Francis Xavier Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, September 26 at 10:30 AM at St Francis Xavier Church, 225 6th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.
