My father’s perseverance in everything he did for his family was hard to miss. He never stopped providing no matter what his job was in Hong Kong and in Canada despite the various hardships he had faced.

At home, he was the jack of all trades. He made sure we lived well and comfortably. He was not a chef, but made delicious dishes without hesitating to get creative. He was not a professional handyman, but had done a great deal of repairs and renovations with the knowledge he had acquired throughout his life. Without him, the house would be less than what it is today. I would give anything to have his spaghetti & char siu once more, and have him show me how to use the tools in his workshop.

Actions spoke louder than words for my father. He had gotten out of his way to help us whenever we had a situation. He had sacrificed numerous nights of sleep just to give us a ride home late at night, and would venture far into unfamiliar parts of the city to buy what was needed. I had once injured myself and was unable to move by myself in my apartment. He stopped what he was doing when I told him about it, came right away to see what was going on, and took care of me for the rest of the day. He gave himself a harder life just so we could have it easier.

The house is now empty without him. His favourite songs and movies are no longer playing. All the sounds and noises I attribute to him have gone silent. Even the voice he had when nagging me would not sound too bad right now. As a father, he had done what he could with what he had. I can only hope I had not been too much of a disappointment to him as a son. 

Thank you for being my father, and for giving me the chance of being your son. I wish you well wherever you are now. Until we meet again, take care.
