Evelyn was born September 19, 1934, in the Birch Community in Burleson County, TX, the first daughter of Adolph and Minnie (Meier) Poehls. She was a member of Faith United Church of Christ in Bryan until its merging with Bryan Community Church, and SPJST Lodge #39 in Bryan.
Evelyn retired from the Schnadig Corporation (International Furniture) in Bryan where she was a furniture inspector. Upon its closing, she went to work at Dillard’s Department Store in College Station as a sales clerk, Villa Maria Cleaners doing alterations, Siegert Water Wells in Smetana, and Checkworthy. She was definitely no stranger to work! That was all she knew having been raised on the farm, helping her dad in the fields, being “the son” her parents never had. Her education consisted of completing the seventh grade but later received her GED June 6, 1990, at 55 years of age.
Evelyn loved making quilts and baby blankets for her family. She had a passion for embroidery, embroidering pillowcases for her family and friends. She insisted on adding lace to the pillowcases and points around the quilts as her signature mark to make them “dressier”. Evelyn was a fantastic seamstress, making at least 13 dresses and headpieces for her daughter Lois’s wedding. She made numerous matching outfits for herself, Lois and Janice, sewing practically everything they wore. There were numerous times that she was asked by family and friends to make alterations to clothing. She even made warm hunting suits for her sons, Havard and Lonnie. Above all else, Evelyn’s pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughters.
Evelyn and her sister, Erma Macik, loved traveling to Branson, MO, several times a year. Mel Tillis was her favorite singer at that time; they always made sure to catch one of his shows every time they went.
Evelyn met the love of her life, Stanley Macik, at a dance in Deanville, TX. They later married on July 24, 1951, and had four children, Lois, Havard, Lonnie and Janice. They were married for 36 years until his passing in 1987. They loved dancing to polka music as well as country music. Stanley and Evelyn could be seen most Saturday nights at the SPJST Hall in Bryan, as well as other in-town and out-of-town places, sometimes on Sunday afternoons.
Evelyn Macik is preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Minnie Poehls; her husband, Stanley Macik; brother-in-law Rudolph Macik; sons-in-law Douglas Coburn and Ernest Jeske.
