Joe Earl Allen, 89, of Bryan, Texas, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on September 28, 1928, in Sulligent, AL, to Walter Bailey and Tommie Lee Allen. He attended Lamar County High School and received a BS in geology from the University of Alabama. He proudly served in both the Navy (1947 – 1950) and the Army (1953 – 1954.) He was employed by Exxon (Humble Oil and Esso) from 1953 until he retired in 1986. He was an active member of First Baptist Church Bryan, and volunteered his free time by passing out Bibles for Gideons International.
Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Anne Young of Vernon, AL, and his son Michael Allen of Costa Rica.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Price Allen, daughters Barbara Scamardo of Bryan, TX, and Jane Carrier and husband Gary of Rowlett, TX, his grandchildren Leah Scamardo Vernon and husband Donnie of Bryan, TX, Michael Bond of Houston, TX, Lara Scamardo Neal and husband Clint of Boerne, TX and Thomas Bond of Houston, TX and his three great grandchildren Jace Vernon, Garrett Vernon, and Sophia Bond. He is also survived by his nephews Paul Young, Jr. Bob Young, and niece Lee Anne Montgomery, all of Vernon, AL.
All services for Mr. Allen will be held Saturday, June 9th at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, TX. Visitation begins at 1pm with services immediately following at 2pm. Dr. Tim Owens will officiate. There will not be a graveside service. Honorary pallbearers are OE Clark, Harvey McFalls, George McBee, Jim White, Jim Jackson, and Bill Wiman all from First Baptist.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Gideons International for the purchase of Bibles.
