They had farm shares with the owner of the ranch they lived on. Lucille and her siblings would tend the ranch. Nita would sew together cotton sacks for them to go on the land to pick cotton and bring it home when it was ready to harvest. Most of the time Lucille would leave early in order to help her mother cook and feed the family.
On July 9 1950, Lucille married Benny. On August 8, 1951, Lucille and Benny welcomed their first-born daughter, Laurel Jane. In 1954, Benny was sent to Korea for Army infantry. He was enlisted in the army for three years. While Benny was in the army, Lucille and Laurel Jane stayed with Nita and Luke until Benny arrived home from combat. On December 17, 1959, they welcomed their second born daughter, Anita Kaye. Later, they finally welcomed a baby boy, Bennett Gerard on January 14, 1966.
In early years, Lucille worked for a dry-cleaning company called American Laundry.
After that, Lucille worked for Perry Brothers in downtown Bryan for 32 years, where she retired. She made two lifelong friends who also worked at Perry’s, Willie Mae and Thelma. After she retired, she decided to get a job working at a church nursery. In addition to her jobs, she volunteered and helped with Catholic funeral services. Her faith was a strong and she was a devoted Catholic.
She enjoyed being around her family the most. Her family was her pride and joy. She always enjoyed cooking, gathering around her old wooden table for meals, and being a mighty servant. On Sundays, she would make her famous spaghetti and meatballs. She would serve everyone and always serving herself last.
She had a heart of gold. She never met a stranger, always making every person she met apart of her. She always took care of everyone. In later years, when she needed assistance, she would become “family” with them appreciating all they have done.
If you couldn’t catch her with her family, you could find her with her best friend, Evelyn Cooper. They always enjoyed their Whataburger trips.
Lucille’s granddaughter, Jaime, began working at Lampstand nursing home. The day Jaime began her employment, was the day Lucille moved into the facility. She made tons of friends. She also treated every employee from therapy to the nursing staff, just like her family. She enjoyed Bingo and the parties. Jaime kept a bowl of costume jewelry at her desk and she would always wheel up to her office to go through her favorite jewelry to get ready for the next party.
Later, she moved to Accel nursing home. Her roommate, Mildred and her were the best of friends. Between Bingo trips together to taking care of one another, they were inseparable.
Lucille was described as feisty, strong, loving, caring and handled people with full of grace. If you were around Lucille, you would always share laughter with her.
