

She was born July 31, 1912 in Hallettsville, Texas the oldest of nine children. Her parents were H.G. Timm, Sr. and Eddie Lewis Timm. Marie grew up in Hallettsville where she married Joe Sommerlatte in 1932. They moved to El Campo and lived there for many years. They owned and operated a gift shop and clothing store “Sommerlatte’s” for a number of years. Joe Sommerlatte died in 1959 following an extended illness. She then went to work for Appling Krueger Drug Store in El Campo until she retired at the age of 62. During this time she met and married Al W. Powell, Jr. in 1967. He died in 1982.
Marie was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in El Campo for 60 years. She enjoyed her Sunday School class, the Wesleyan Service Guild, and U.M.W. and served on many committees within the church.
She was a member of the Sorosis Club for 40 years, and the Hoe and Hope Horticulture Club. Being an avid yard and garden worker, she loved her beautiful yard. She was a resident of El Campo for 70 years. Five of those years she enjoyed living at Wincrest Retirement Home. When she was 98 she moved to The Lampstand Nursing Home in Bryan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Joe Sommerlatte and Al W. Powell; brothers, Forest Wayne “Tommy” Timm, Frank Timm, H.G. “Bunny” Timm, Jr.; sisters, Nannie Jane “Doll” Moore and Bonnie Rae Buske.
Marie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Bill Zieren of Bryan; four grandchildren, Chrysa Sparrow and husband Kevin of Lewisville, Texas, Ken Zieren and wife Dawn of Houston, Leah and husband Ben Alves of Flower Mound, Texas and John Zieren of Irving, Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Lindsay Little Best, Jace Little, Brett Zieren, Blake Zieren, Bryan Zieren, Austin Alves and Brenden Alves; sisters, Virginian Mikulenka of Rockport, Alma Joyce “Sweet” Hrncir and husband Bill of Hallettsville; brother Gene Timm and wife Betty of Hallettsville.
Funeral service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in El Campo at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday December 30, 2014. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will follow the service at Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Lampstand for their loving care for Marie, especially Callie, Amy and Nancy.
