Velma was a beloved mother, wife, sister and friend whose life was defined by her love for family and friends. She touched many lives through her warm heart and love of learning, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She grew up in Normal, Illinois and graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in elementary education. She moved to Houston, Texas when she married and lived there with her husband and daughter until 2002, when they moved to Bryan.
Velma spent her career teaching inner city children in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Houston, Texas. She especially enjoyed reading, attending church and traveling with her husband during her early retirement. In her later years, she loved running the lending library at Crestview Retirement Community, where she lived since 2020.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Burnett, and her parents, Ruth and Lowell Kuntz. She is survived by her daughter, Kathi (Burnett) Malin, and her son-in-law, Chris Malin. She is also survived by her four younger siblings: David Kuntz, Mary Shoff, Ken Kuntz and Paul Kuntz.
She will be interred in Michigan later this year, so there is no service planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Covenant Fund at MRC–Crestview (https://www.mrcaff.org/giving).
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her Crestview caregivers and the Brazos Valley Hospice team for their compassion and support.
Her legacy of love lives on in those she leaves behind.
