

Verda Ames Barron, 94, of Bryan, passed away Friday, January 1, 2016 at the Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility in Bryan. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Funeral Home with Reverend Matt Idom officiating. Burial will be at College Station Cemetery.
Verda was born November 20, 1921 in Wellington Texas to Floyd and Myrtle Thompson. She graduated from Samnorwood High School in Lutie, Texas and attended Texas Women’s’ University in Denton. She met and married E.E. Ames in 1944 and had daughter Peggy Lynn before moving to College Station in 1945. In 1952 they adopted a son, John Weldon. E. E. Ames passed away in 1965 and Verda married Joe R. Barron in 1969.
Verda worked for several organizations as a bookkeeper over the years: Dr. O. C. Cooper, Durst, Wood & Ingram, and R. B. Butler. She was a long-time member of the Upper Room Class at First United Methodist Church in Bryan. She was very active as a volunteer after retirement with Health for All and P. E. T. Ministry for the handicapped. She continued to sew for the public until she was 93.
Verda was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister, both husbands and her son.
She is survived by her daughter Peggy Ames Calliham and former son-in-law Michael Calliham, Sr. from College Station; daughter Vivian Moss and husband Kent of Midland; son Dave Barron and wife Dianne of Troy, Alabama; grandsons Dr. Michael Calliham, Jr. and wife Joella of College Station and Sean Patrick Calliham and wife Lisa of Pearland; granddaughters Frances Jean Sullivan and husband Matt of Austin, and Amanda Kellar and husband Dustin of Argyle, Texas. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Ashley, Aaron, Haley and Makenna Calliham, Joseph South and wife Jessica and Joshua South.
