Longtime Burbank resident Agnes “Boots” Townsend passed away peacefully on March 3rd, just a month shy of her 90th birthday. Survivors include daughters Sally Ferguson and Stacey Gross, and son Jim Townsend, along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Townsend, sons Paul and Boyd Townsend, and daughter Eileen Dickson.
Boots survived a challenging childhood, married Bill during World War II, and they settled in the San Fernando Valley in the mid-1950’s. Besides raising her six children, Boots had a varied working career, from waitressing at the Burger Bar in Reseda to working as an electronics technician. She was an early associate of car stereo pioneer Earl “Madman” Muntz.
In retirement, Boots became an active community volunteer, working for many years at the Burbank Temporary Aid Center. She was honored as Burbank’s Volunteer of the Year for her service. She enjoyed traveling, bingo and other games of chance, and was a strong supporter of Native American enterprises. Her strong Catholic faith sustained her through both joy and sorrows.
A funeral mass will be held on Monday, March 11th at 11:00 AM at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Burbank. Private interment at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery will follow.
