It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Afentoula Arnaoutoglou (nee Maroulis) on May 23, 2020, with family by her side. Afentoula was born on May 24, 1927 in Filippi, Greece. Afentoula was predeceased by her parents, her husband Petros in 2006 and her siblings John and Athanasia, and 2 brother in laws Felipa and Neofitos. She is survived by and will be forever remembered by her children Fotini , Alekos(Wanda), her grandchildren Demetri, Katerina, Petros, Corina, Peter and Alex, great-grandchildren Jessica, Julia, Marco, Katerina, Mattea and Kalia. Also her siblings Aglaitsa, Kitsa, Chris (Donna), brother in law Nick and sister in law Evangelia, many nieces, nephews, friends and family near and far.
As a teenager in Greece, Afentoula was a very caring and responsible big sister. During times of war she kept her siblings safe by fleeing into the mountains. As a young lady she worked in a fish cannery.
Afentoula along with her husband and son travelled to Vancouver, BC by plane in October 1973. Before arriving in Vancouver, they landed in Toronto and because they didn’t speak English they got lost and missed their flight to Vancouver. Once arriving in Vancouver, Afentoula lived for many years with her daughter and took on an active role in guiding and raising her 3 eldest grandchildren. She was always a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved good food and sharing long conversations with family and friends. She had a passion for gardening, knitting and cooking. She spent days preparing traditional Greek dishes in advance of family gatherings. She always loved spending time with family and friends and always had no shame in reminding you that too many days have passed since talking to or seeing you last.
Afentoula will be missed dearly by family and friends but are comforted in knowing that she is at peace and reunited with her husband and siblings. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew her.
The family would like to express a deep gratitude to the caregivers at Broadway Pentecostal Lodge in Vancouver.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family funeral will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 4500 Arbutus St. Vancouver, BC on June 3, 2020 11:00am.
