Alan Leslie Rudolph

Born May 9, 1950, Al lived a life defined by quiet dedication, hard work, humour, and deep community roots. He lived in Burnaby his whole life and was a loyal son to his loving mother Lillian “Lil”, and his father, Arthur, who was also his best friend.

Although Al never had children of his own, he was a devoted and much-loved uncle. He spent many Christmases on Vancouver Island with his brother, sister-in-law, and nieces, and never missed an important milestone for his nieces Amanda and Karen, or his great-niece, Jessica and great-nephew, Jordan. To them, he was a source of wisdom, terrible jokes, and unwavering support.

Al spent 35 years as a bus driver with BC Transit (later TransLink). His favourite and longest-standing assignment was the early morning route to Simon Fraser University, and he took great pride in getting students living off-campus to class safely and on time - though not without a classic smirk and a cheeky remark along the way.

Al also found an unexpected calling in volunteering with the Burnaby Men’s Soccer Association. What began as an argument with a coach eventually led to nearly 20 years as President of the association - a role he embraced with the same dedication he brought to everything he cared about. That story perfectly captures who Al was, a proud man with strong opinions and a big heart.

Al was humble about his accomplishments and had a wicked sense of humour. He loved battleships and military history, travelling, old westerns and classic movies, and was a big softie for dogs. Most of all, he loved his family and his many lifelong friends.

Though he was stubborn and had a tough exterior, those who knew Al well saw the very compassionate and generous man underneath. He had a huge heart, loved his family unconditionally, and was always willing to help someone in need. He will be remembered for his hard work, loyalty, humour, and the quiet kindness he showed to those around him.

Al is survived by his loving sister-in-law of 53 years, Susan; his treasured nieces, Amanda (Keith), Karen (Michael), Rhonda (Shawn), and Laura; and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Daniel Rudolph and his parents, Arthur and Lillian Rudolph.

A private celebration of Al’s life will be held for family and close friends this fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.
