Annie Kit Chun Wong had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, and any room a little warmer. Long before she became known as a wife and mother, she was a young woman who crossed an ocean alone to study in Canada, one of the first among her friends to attend college abroad.
Annie was born on August 29, 1936, in Hong Kong. She grew up in Happy Valley and attended St. Paul's Convent School, where she made friends who stayed with her for life. After graduation, she left for Canada to study at Brescia University College in London, Ontario, then returned home to Hong Kong to become a schoolteacher.
In 1964, she married Alfred P.C. Wong, her partner of more than sixty years. In the 1970s, she left her life in Hong Kong a second time, this time so her children could have a better education in Canada, and the family settled in Burlington, Ontario. There, she built a warm and loving home for their children and helped Alfred manage his dental practice, becoming a familiar and welcome face to generations of his patients. After Alfred's retirement, they moved to the West Coast, settling in Richmond, British Columbia, where they became part of the St. Joseph the Worker parish community.
Annie was vibrant and outgoing, drawn to dancing and music, and she always drew others to her in turn. Open hearted and endlessly curious about people, she became a bedrock of the small Chinese community in Burlington, hosting Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Chinese New Year celebrations that brought people together year after year.
To everyone else, Annie was luminous, the woman who lit up every gathering she joined. But to her family, she was something quieter and more essential: a devoted wife and mother who put them before herself without a second thought. She raised her children with steady, unwavering love, and in Alfred's later years, as he faced Alzheimer's and COPD, she became his caregiver too, tending to him with the same quiet devotion she had given for sixty years. Annie asked for little and gave everything, to her husband, to her children, and to everyone she loved.
Annie is lovingly remembered by her daughter Adelina and her husband Bill; her son Lester and his wife, Ronnie; her grandchildren Tyler, Tian, Aly, and Ria; and her wider family and many friends across Canada, the United States, and Hong Kong.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated for Annie and her beloved husband Alfred together at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Richmond, British Columbia, on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. (PDT), followed by a reception, with a private inurnment along with her beloved husband to follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby.
