With great sadness we announce the passing of Barbara Beatrice Stewart (nee Price), affectionally known to many as ‘Mimi.’ Barbara leaves us in her 94th year after 3 years of long-term care. Barbara passed peacefully while surrounded by her family and is survived by her loving husband of seventy four years, Bob; her sister Joan (Entzminger of Victoria), her six children; Tommy (Cathy), Jim (Kathy), Bob (Linda), Bill (Sharon), Rick (Fariba), Lynda (Ron) (Fellows of Toronto) 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 2 more expected shortly; many extended family and friends.
Barbara was born in Edmonton and came to Vancouver at an early age with her parents George and Vera Price. She attended Laura Secord Elementary and Vancouver Technical High School (1950) where she was an outstanding athlete, participating in multiple sports and track events. She was active in the school community, the Student Council Secretary, and the recipient of the Citizenship Award.
It was at high school where Bob and Barbara met. They made their home in Burnaby and were active volunteers. Barbara’s contributions began with being actively involved in the church, parish, and children’s school. Over the years Barbara championed many worthwhile causes, including Ronald McDonald House, Share the Future Foundation, Crimestoppers of Greater Vancouver, Volunteer Grandparents Association, Burnaby Arts Council, Vancouver Tap Dance Society, Mainstream Association for Proactive Community Living, and the BC Paraplegic Association. In Addition, Barbara was invited to join the Order of St. John where she utilized her fundraising skills to assist in opening a hospice on the grounds of UBC.
Barbara’s biggest impact came with her involvement in Variety – the Children’s Charity of BC where she was instrumental in gaining open membership, developing the Gold Heart Campaign for Canada earning the title ‘Mrs. Gold Hearts,’ and Co-Chairing Variety’s Special Needs Playground at Burnaby’s Central Park. Barbara served as the first female Chief Barker of Variety of BC and Vice President at Variety International, she was a member of the Advisory Council and recipient of the 40-year Volunteer Award.
Funeral arrangements are as follows: A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross, 1450 Delta Avenue, Burnaby on Monday May 4th at 11 am followed by a Celebration of Life from 1-3 pm at the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, 7600 Halifax Street, Burnaby. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the management, staff, and caregivers at The Madison Care Centre.
