Bessie Eng, beloved mother, wife and grandmother passed away at Windemere Care Centre on September 20, 2020 at 94 years of age. Her husband Ed passed away earlier this year and they had 60 great years of marriage. Bessie, grew up in Victoria and then Vancouver and was one of fourteen children. Her large family was a huge part of her life which included warm family gatherings, memorable vacations with some of her brothers and sisters, as well as playing bridge, tennis and golf with them as the years went on. She and Ed played golf locally and on many vacations well into their 80s. The Quilchena Golf Club was a big part of her life as she was part of the ladies golf group, helped with the junior program and played bridge there. She also played tennis for many years at the Richmond Tennis Club.
Bessie was a wonderful mother - she was forever cheerful and happy and brought the sunshine into the room. She was an incredible cook with an impossible-to-forget short ribs dish, pies with perfectly flaky crusts and sky-high birthday cakes. She worked part-time alongside Ed at an IGA where she learned cake decorating. She was also a talented seamstress, making elaborate Halloween costumes for her children. Her artistic side was also on full display with her paintings, copper tooling and mosaic tile tables. She enjoyed being a grandmother and played "ready golf" with her grandkids as they sprinted after her.
She is survived by her children, Eydie (Bobby), Mitch (Lorna) and Janice (Tony); her grandchildren Gwen, Kristen, Kevin, Hayley and Em; her sisters Mary, Doris, Kay and Sue and brothers Sonny, Ernie and Peter (Rosabelle); and Ed's brother Jackson (Suzanne). An online celebration of Ed and Bessie's lives will take place shortly.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer's Society of BC would be appreciated. We thank the Windemere Staff for their wonderful care.
