Mr. Chee Wing Shum

Chee Wing Shum, gently left his family on February 17, 2026, at age 98.

Living a long and determined life Chee Wing was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Chui Hing Shum in 2019. He is survived by his children Harry Shum (Susanna), Shirley Quan (Harvey) and Michael Shum (Karla Greer); as well as his seven grandchildren Richard Shum (Esther Khor), Bryan Quan (Carrie Ma), Christina Wong (Eric), Alex Quan, Nicola Quan (Tom Song), Graeme Greer-Shum and Coen Greer-Shum, and his seven great-grandchildren Greyson Song, Noah Quan, Charleigh Wong, Harper Song, Oliver Quan, Elias Wong and Henrik Shum.

Chee Wing embraced responsibility throughout his life. As a teenager (in Panyu, China) he cared for his younger siblings when they were orphaned, he married young and became a father in China before embarking on a life-changing move to Canada. Chee Wing spent 10 years working in Canada, separated from his family, before he was able to have them join him in his new country. He worked at the Port Alberni mill for much of his working life, and he took pride in his labour as he was able to provide for his family. After retirement Chee Wing moved to Vancouver to be nearer to his children and grandchildren. He was able to live in his own home with his wife until 2015 when they moved in with his son and daughter-in-law until such time as he needed additional care. The last 8 years of his life Chee Wing received excellent care at Cathay Villa and enjoyed frequent visits with family.

It is with sad celebration that we mark the end of long and well-lived life.
