December 21, 1921 to January 23, 2021
Mr. Fu, Chiu-Wan 超雲 passed peacefully on January 23, 2021 in Richmond, British Columbia. He was survived by his wife of 45 years, Sau Ha 邵秀霞. She was at his bedside when he passed.
Chiu-Wan was born in Hong Kong on December 21, 1921. It was a time of chaos and war He lost his father Fu Kwok-Leung 傅國良; a brother Fu Wing-Kon 傅榮光 and a sister Choi-Nan 傅彩蘭 and another “unknown” sister during this early period of his life as a child. Chiu-Wan was also preceded by his mother Chan Yuk 陳玉 later in life and his other brother Foo Chiu-Hung 傅超雄 in 2020.
He is survived by his younger sister Fu Suk-Yee 傅淑儀 who lives in San Francisco, U.S.A.
Chiu-Wan is sadly missed by his children: Zachary啟昌, Paul啟發, Michael 啟文, Louis 啟基, Carman 嘉敏, and their families, grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
Chiu-Wan struggled through his teenage years during the Japanese invasion of China and Hong Kong. He worked odd jobs and supported his mother and family. He traveled to Hainan Island and worked in the Japanese Naval shipyard. Chiu-Wan managed to learn the skill sets as a mariner in the naval shipyard environment and embarked on his career after the war in the industry of commercial mariners.
Chiu-Wan attained the rank and certificates of captain and soon was in command of his own vessels. He joined the Marine Department of the British Hong Kong Government and was in charge of the research vessel Cape St. Mary in the sixties.
Chiu-Wan left the Hong Kong Government and joined the commercial ship industry afterwards. He had been to every corners of the world and traveled the seven seas. He had dinners with sultans and mayors around the world. He had experienced a full and rewarding sailor life.
In his early marine merchant life, he mentored his brother Foo Chiu-Hung 傅超雄 whom also rose through the ranks and became a captain. They were well known in the industry as the Fu (Foo) brothers who were generous and loyal to their friends.
Chiu-Wan retired in Canada in the 80s. He continued to live an active life: golfing, lawn-bowling and practicing tai-chi. He also travelled with Sau Ha on cruises, enjoying being a passenger instead of in command of a vessel. Most of all, he never missed his daily and weekly dim-sum gatherings with his friends and families.
Lastly, our gratitude to Dr. Erik Calvert, for his sympathetic and professional care of our father during the last few months of his journey. Dr. Calvert is an orthopedic surgeon in Richmond Hospital. In addition, our deep appreciation to the staff at Minoru Residence who looked after him at a place he called home for the last two years until the end.
