Chuck Wong was born on August 28th, 1931 in the Taishan province located in China. He married his wife Fai Goon at the age of 17 years old. They had their first daughter Mary on May 1952 in China. He migrated into Canada in the early 1950s; where three more children were born. One day, I asked dad, "why did you come to Canada?". He responded, "he brought his family over to Canada to seek a better life." Dad was a very hard working man who did his best to provide for his family. I remember Dad always provided food on the table and fed us very well. He did not give us any material things or extra money to spend but he always made sure we ate well. It seems as we were growing up, even into our adulthood, that seem to be his belief.
He worked for many years at his family restaurant until he decided to work for BC Ferries. He worked for the Queen of the North, the ferry that sailed up the coast from Swatze Bay to Prince Rupert for approximately 25 years. He was the cook at the ferry and he often brought home some of the recipes he learned from there; his favourite foods being pound cake, apple pie and manhatten clam chowder. It was the best food I've had and only Dad could make it so "yummy".
His hobbies outside of work were fishing, watching chinese movies and listening to music. In our pre-teen and teenager years, he would take his family out every weekend to watch the featured Chinese movie at the Golden Harvest Theatre located in Chinatown. His favourite Chinese Opera was the Ming Dynasty Princess Cheung Ping, a famous story about the last days of the Ming Dynasty and what happened to the surviving princess.
Throughout the years, he would have several family gathering at his place where there always a spread of good food to celebrate all the occasions.
