Colin Foh Onn Chin

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Colin Foh Onn Chin, who left this world peacefully at Richmond General Hospital on July 25, 2026. Born on November 23, 1936, in Lutong, Sarawak, Malaysia, Colin lived a life filled with adventure, dedication, and love. Colin's journey began in the lush landscapes of rural Borneo, where he found his calling as an educator. His passion for teaching took him and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Yapp, to many remote areas, where they dedicated themselves to guiding and inspiring hundreds of students. Married in December 1962, Colin and Elizabeth built a wonderful life together, raising three children: Solomon (Alice), Mavis (Tom), and Stella (Adam). Their family grew to include five grandchildren: Cherisse (Trevor), Isaac, Kirstin, Isabelle, and Arianne, all of whom Colin cherished deeply. Colin and Elizabeth immigrated to Vancouver Canada in 1991 and continued to build a life here with their family, overcoming life's challenges with much courage, strength, tenacity and resilience.

A man of strong character, Colin was known for his friendly and outgoing personality. We will always honor and remember Colin as someone with a very kind and generous heart. He had a strong sense of traditional family values which he has passed on as a legacy to his children and grandchildren. Colin devoted his time being an "uber driver" for his grandchildren whilst they were young and helping out whenever possible with his children's and grandchildren's busy lives.

Colin's educational journey was marked by remarkable achievements. He completed his primary school education in St Columbas Primary school, Miri and finished his high school in St Thomas Secondary school, Kuching, subsequently graduating with a teaching certificate from the Teachers training college in Kuching. He was also awarded a scholarship under the Colombo Plan to study physical education in London. These experiences enriched his career as a school principal and a respected officer in the Ministry of Education, making a lasting impact on his students and colleagues.

Despite facing the challenges of Parkinson's disease in his later years, he remained steadfast, supported by the unwavering love and care of Elizabeth, his devoted partner. His resilience and sacrifices inspired those around him, leaving a legacy of strength, courage and perseverance.

A service to celebrate Colin's life will be held at 10:00 am on August 29, 2026, at Forest Lawn Chapel.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Hamilton High Street Residence and Richmond General Hospital for their compassionate care during Colin's final days. Hebrews 6:10: "God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them."

Colin Foh Onn Chin will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
