Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, David moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1972. He built a respected career in the North Shore shipyards, where he worked for 36 years as a journeyman welder and shipbuilder. At age 52, David earned his Red Seal Certification as a millwright, graduating at the top of his class, an achievement that reflected his determination, skill, and lifelong commitment to learning.
David found great joy in music, especially playing the steelpan and other instruments. He also enjoyed cricket, golf, and travelling the world. A true jack-of-all-trades, he was always ready to fix, build, or improve something around the house. David shared his Caribbean spirit through music, warmth, and a welcoming smile. He will be remembered for his talent, resourcefulness, and the joy he brought to the lives of those around him.
David was the last of his siblings, having been predeceased by his beloved sister and brothers. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Karuna Toolsee; their children, Curt Toolsee and Kasha Toolsee; and grandchildren, Gemma and Gavin Toolsee.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bell & Burnaby Funeral Chapel.
Donations in David’s memory may be made directly to the BC Cancer Foundation at bccancerfoundation.com.
