Emma Vivanco

Emma was born on June 5th, 1945, in Santiago, Chile to Maria Soto Cordova and Reynaldo Leiva Bahamondes. She was the second youngest of 9 siblings; Reynaldo, Nora, Sylvia, Gustavo, Elena, Pedro, Juan, & Paty.

She was always known to her family in Chile as a woman who was ahead of her time; exceptionally unique. Her creative spirit shined through her remarkable talent as a clothing designer and costume maker. Emma's personality was beautifully intense; you could feel her passion every time she sang one of her favourite songs, or told you a story. Emma felt grounded in nature, and was at peace near the ocean. She loved to be under the sun, swimming at any chance she had.

Emma was once married to Edelberto Vivanco, with whom she raised 4 children; Martiza, Gisselle, Ivette, and Miguel. In 1976, Emma and Edelberto were exiled from Chile, and safely brought their young children to Canada. She loved her children fiercely and authentically. Emma taught her children to be who they were, and live life to the fullest. She spent the next 50 years building a life in Canada, where she then met her life partner Felix Henriquez. Emma and Felix loved to explore and travel, spending many years together celebrating unique experiences in many different places. Emma always said that her favourite place to travel was Brazil.

Emma was truly a one of a kind woman. She was instantly recognizable by her signature curly red hair, and her welcoming aura. Emma's energy lit up every room, the second she walked in. She was a vibrant, resilient, and intelligent person, who had a true zest for life. She loved to enjoy the moment, whether it was through dancing, singing, laughing, celebrating, or enjoying good food with the ones she loved. Her love language was to share her amazing food with anyone who she crossed paths with. Emma was an incredible cook, who shared her talents with her family on most holidays and birthdays. She had a magnetic presence that drew you in. Those who knew her felt gravitated towards her instantly.

To her grandchildren, she was known as "Emmo". She was an amazingly proud and present grandmother, who cherished her time with all of her grandchildren. Her grandchildren (extended included) are Shawn, Meleana, Reyven, Taliah, David "Cody", Amarhisse, Isla, Mateo, Diego, Jade, Isabella, Paulo, Miguelito, and Alec. Her capacity for love was so strong, that she became a beloved second mother to many, over her time on earth; to Cheryl, Driss, Vynka & many more. Her extended family who she loved dearly includes David, Tracy, Jim, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were fortunate enough to know her warmth.

Emma's life faced many hardships, but she always chose joy over sorrow. She encouraged her loved ones to live life with a smile on their face, do the things you love, and always have faith. It is undeniable that her free spirit and fierce attitude has made a lasting impact on the hearts and minds of so many people. The world is now a quieter place, and she will be missed immensely. Her family will continue to live life loudly, lovingly, colourfully, and authentically, in her honour.
