Fuyao was born on April 4, 1934 in EnPing county, Guandong province, China. He was the youngest of three children. Fuyao graduated from South China University of Technology in 1960 with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and was assigned to teach at the prestigious TsingHua University in Beijing.
He married Li Yao (Li Feng) in 1964. He later moved onto Beijing University of Technology where he taught civil engineering for 20 years. In 1974, he was the structural engineer for the reconstruction of the iconic Beijing Hotel, the tallest building in the city at the time. He was a pioneer in applying computer technology to civil engineering. In 1980, Fuyao moved his family to Vancouver BC to unite with his sister.
Although he dabbled with civil engineering earlier in his life in the new world, he had to give up his passion so that he could raise his children by working at restaurants. After retirement, he lived the rest of his life gardening, reading history about early Chinese immigrants in North America, researching real estate and writing his autobiography.
Fuyao was survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Li and daughter Susan Ying Ying and son Alex Yong Jian and grandsons Brady and Ryan.
Fuyao will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Alzheimer’s Association.
