From your grandchildren...

To us, she wasn’t Fulvia. She wasn’t Aurora either. She was Nonny. And if you’re wondering why she was Nonny and not Nonna it was really because her eldest grandson couldn’t pronounce Nonna. But it stuck. And it made so much sense. Because she was both a Nonna and a Nonno to all us grandkids. She was the plural in all sense of the words.
She took care of us. And mostly it meant ‘mange mange mange’ and eat more and eat more. She cooked us pasta chichi and spaghetti and meatballs, and stuffed peppers, risotto balls and everything and anything else Italian. And she’d make sure we ate until we couldn’t eat another bite. And it also meant making sure each of her three great grandchildren was warm enough, had an extra pillow nearby or a blanket to protect from any dirt.  She took care of all of us.
 
She looked out for us. She was the general of the family. Overseeing all of us and making sure we were okay. And sometimes that meant telling us she didn’t like our haircuts or we shouldn’t pull our hair in ponytails because it made us look bald or we needed to shave our beards immediately before a wedding. She spoke her mind and showed us that it was always okay to speak our own too.
 
And she taught us. So so many things. Not only how to make pasta sauce or about scary sopopa, the Italian ghost that hid underneath our beds. But also about life. About hard work. About perseverance, when the odds are stacked against you. About taking risks for the betterment of your family. About how to run a business and raise 4 children as a single parent and do it all with this amazing positive outlook on life.
 
Because she’s Nonny. And that’s just what you do. We were lucky to have her as our guiding general of the family and even though we may feel a little lost without her now, she taught us how to go on. And for that Nonny, we thank you. We love you and will miss you always.  

Rosy I will always remember your Mom as such a caring person.  She was always so kind to me whenever I saw her.   I will always remember the stories you told me about her strength.  I can’t imagine being left a young widow with four children in a new country.  What a testimony to you and all her family about how she built her sewing skills into her own children’s clothing store.  I know how much you loved her and how much you will miss her.  So sorry that I am unable to attend the service.
