Celebrating the Life of Guang Sheng Sun
Our beloved Guang Sheng passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital on October 3, 2026, in Vancouver, BC, held in love and surrounded by his family.
Guang Sheng was born on August 12, 1945, in Ha’erbin, China. His artistic talent shone through at a very early age. He attended the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing and became a lead artist in the Drama Troupe of China. After pursuing his passion for performing arts for over a decade, he turned his warm nature, elegant presence, and inspirational mind toward serving the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Beijing. During his decades-long leadership, he cultivated the infant marketing branch to a major profit and brand power generator. He then served as general manager and executive in a series of international hospitality establishments and continued his legacy with strategic insight, diplomatic leadership, and genuine care for the people around him until his retirement as a vice president.
On the personal side, he married Li Ying Zhang, his lifelong partner and best friend, 58 years ago, and together they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and deep family bonds. He is known by family and friends for his unwavering devotion to the people he loved. He was a proud father and grandfather to two daughters and four grandchildren. He welcomed his sons-in-law from diverse backgrounds into his family wholeheartedly and treated them as his own. During his late 30s, he supported his wife’s pursuits in Japan and lovingly raised their daughters through their elementary and high school years. He was always encouraging, nurturing, and present. He became a permanent BC resident in 2007 following the family’s relocation and enjoyed caring for his grandchildren in his East Vancouver home. He practiced carpentry around his home and treated his family to his authentic Asian cooking every weekend.
Beyond his travels to Europe during his working years, he explored his new home, Canada, from coast to coast, and deeply appreciated both the natural beauty and the metropolitan energy of the United States. He believed in the power of education and gracefully supported his children and grandchildren in their academic pursuits.
Guang Sheng approached life with optimism, humility and gratitude. Whether sharing laughter at family gatherings, offering a helping hand to friends and neighbors, or making new acquaintances on his adventures, he made those around him feel valued and cared for.
His passing leaves a profound emptiness, but his love remains with us — steady, comforting, and enduring. We take comfort knowing he will look upon us from his resting place so that we will continue his legacy to live our lives to the fullest just as he wished.
We will honour him always and miss him dearly.
Guang Sheng is survived by his wife Li Ying Zhang, daughters Mei Karen Sun and Wei Maggie Sun, sons-in-law James Chan and Jianbo Liu, grandchildren Landon Chan, Satinee Chan, Aaron Leo Berezin, Aliya Kaelyn Berezin, and his extended family overseas.
