Valerie – Rehab Assistant, Bus Driver
It was a pleasure getting to know Hector and learning about his experiences overseas in the army. He was generous and compassionate and never afraid to share how he was really feeling and I will miss his humorous commentary during bus trips.

Robert – BF4 Resident
He was a good guy. Him and I talked a lot when he was outside, I was one of the few people he really talked to. He used to get me cigarettes when I couldn’t get them.  And he was always there to talk.  He spent time with me in the Armed Forces in Ottawa.  I had no problem with him, he was always there when I went out.  We spent a lot of time talking and kept mostly to ourselves, we each had separate corners in the smoking area.  His special spot and my special spot.  We could talk about anything.  He had a temper but he never held it on anyone for very long.  The nurses were always trying to get us to come inside and we would just laugh and egg each other on, making a little mischief.  He was a good buddy. I saw him every day.  I cried for a whole day and saw him when he was passing.  I asked if there was anything I could do.  We always tried to make each other quit smoking but we never could.  He knew a lot of people and that’s how I got to know a lot of people.  Neither of us were morning people so in the afternoon we were fine.  We both liked a good coffee too.  And he always looked out for his friends.  He was a good guy.  And we helped each other and we talked with each other, I might have gotten to know him better than most.

Karen – Clinical Nurse Leader
I miss out daily chats in the smoking area.  He was a kind, generous, and thoughtful gentleman that always cared for everybody including the staff.  He could be a little bit crusty on the outside but on the inside, he was pure sweet mush.  I miss Hector.

Peter – BF3 Resident
He was a nice man.  He had an uplifting spirit about him.  He made you feel at ease.  He was a great person.  He was an exquisite artist and his artwork that is up around the building, puts me to shame!  I wish I had his talent as an artist and his eye for detail.

Subani – Care Aide
When I looked at him he was a little bit stiff but he was always joking.  When I would do care for him he would say his name differently and we would joke together.  I would ask him “So you’re Nelson?” and he would say “No that’s not my name!”  And then laugh.  He was a good guy.  I used to come from the back of the building where he smoked and we would always wave to each other, there was a good connection there.  I miss him.

Ramnik – BF4 Resident
He was a very good guy.  We used to sit together and bring me pop.  He would call me “little friend.”  He was a very helpful guy, he would always give me cigarettes and if I didn’t have money he would say “that’s okay, you can pay me later.”

Diandra – Unit Clerk BF4
Hector was very sweet.  He was always very welcoming and we always had lovely chats when we talked.  He was always the first to say hello and always the last person I said goodbye to when I was leaving the building and we will all miss him very much.

Assad – EVS, Laundry, Supplies
He used to tell me to Get my blooming carts out of his way, because they were always an obstacle for him and I was slowing him down for his smoke break.  It was kind of fun and no fun to watch him falling asleep while smoking.  I always tried to warn him, but it was hard when he was falling asleep.  Best of all, he would say to me very sternly “Get your job done because you’re in my way!”  He would be very grumpy and then we would laugh and smile together.  He will be missed for sure.

Juanita – BF4 Resident
Hector was a good guy.  And I miss him.

Hector was a delight, I loved to see him hanging out in his powerchair in full tilt basking in the sun, his eyes closed, with a cigarette in one hand.  Sometimes when I would approach him from far away he would have a grumpy look on his face, but just talking to him for a few sentences in and he’d be crafting a joke.  He had the most beautiful smile and he really brought light into my day and to many other staff here at Brock Fahrni.  I’m going to miss him.

Hector was such a kind and wonderful person, and I feel very fortunate to have known him. I work at the reception desk, and one of my favourite memories of him is seeing him come out of the elevator with a big smile on his face as soon as he saw me. Every morning, I would greet him by saying, “Good morning, Hector!,” and he would always reply with a big smile, “Good morning, my dear.” It was such a simple exchange, but it became a very special part of my day. I truly miss seeing his smiling face. I will always remember Hector for his kindness, his warm smile, his wonderful sense of humour, and the happiness he brought to my mornings. He will be deeply missed and always remembered with warmth and affection.
