Jimmy passed away, peacefully, with his family by his side, on November 26, 2023 at the age of 92. Born in Toisan, Guangdong, China on November 29, 1930, he was the youngest of 4 children. Arriving in Vancouver, BC at the age of 19, he worked hard his entire life. He enjoyed being with his family and, in retirement, appreciated the simple things.
He is survived by his wife Lila; children Muriel (Bill), Gary (Mandy), Nancy (Peter), Norma, Ken (Paula); grandchildren Justin, Courtney, Claire and his older sister, Yuet Sem, in Hong Kong and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Yook Gai and Yook Wai.
Upon his arrival, Jimmy took any odd jobs he could find until, at the age of 39, he got the opportunity to run his own successful restaurant in North Vancouver. Jimmy learned to cook by watching the cooks at Britannia Mine when he worked there from 1952-1958.
Not only was Jimmy an excellent cook, he was extremely handy in repairing whatever was needed, be it electrical, plumbing, or automotive. He could fix and build almost anything. He was a kind, gentle, self-reliant, and self-taught man who always put himself last.
He will always be remembered and forever loved.
Thank you to the Neurosciences Team at Vancouver General Hospital for his care.
A visitation for Jimmy will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby, BC V5G3M1. A funeral service will occur Sunday, December 10, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home.
