Kam Leung Dong

October 27, 1938 – February 1, 2014

Our dear Papa Dong passed away unexpectedly but peacefully and was surrounded by family in his final moments. He will be forever loved and missed by his loving wife, Lin Tai (Lisa); daughter, Marlene and her partner, Kuan Foo; daughter, Karen and first grandson, Austen Chong; as well as daughter, Alice and her husband, Ernie Pao and second grandson, Marcus.

In 1959, our father made the long and difficult journey to Canada from China with the hope of making enough money to support the mother and siblings he was leaving behind. Upon arriving in Vancouver, he must have found the cultural and social barriers overwhelming, but thanks to a good community of relatives and friends, he managed to find work as a chef, support his family back home, and provide for his new wife and three daughters.

He is remembered for being an honest, simple, quiet man (unless the Canucks lost a game.) He was admired for his integrity, honour and propriety, but most of all he was beloved for his kindness and generosity. Under his watch, your lawn and garden would thrive, your snow-covered sidewalk would always be shoveled, your home would always be clean, and your holiday dinner would include a succulent prime rib and all the trimmings.

Our family wishes to thank everyone for their condolence and support. As well, we would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff at Vancouver General Hospital.
