I'll remember Karl as generous man, he was kind, fiercely independent, with a passion for fishing. While we would be thinking of it, he was doing it. He would help others, his neighbors, family and the elderly. Always reliable and prepared, I guess that's why my friends liked Karl. In fact my buddy Joe would go hunting with Karl when I couldn't make the trip.

When Karl and Mary lived on Elliott St in Vancouver, they were always up early doing chores, unless you were to drop by and visit for awhile, and have tea and cookies. It seemed strange back then, that he would wash his cars in the rain, he said this was so he didn't have to hose down the messy soapy water in the laneway, always considerate of others. My friends would say his car was cleaner than showroom and so clean you could eat right off the engine.

He talked about his youth a lot, his generation went through hard times of that era, but he recounted the good times as well, especially fishing, an escape from the hardship of internment. 

After the war his parents took the family back to Japan. But his luck would turn around and Karl being Canadian, fluent in English was the break to land him a great job at the US Army PX store. Then the Korean Conflict broke out to war, he like other young Canadians in Japan at the time, enlisted in the Canadian Army. His service in Korea with the Canadian Army, ultimately got him home to Canada. Always Loyal he would proudly raise the Maple Leaf on Canada Day.

Karl and his generation are the product of those days past, not forgetting but moving forward, respecting his heritage.
