May 1, 1945 – October 19, 2026
Kathryn was born in Hamilton, Ontario on May 1, 1945 and grew up in neighbouring London. She was predeceased by her parents Ralph and Alice Jamieson; and aunt Eileen Jamieson. Also predeceased by Alice Stevenson of Nova Scotia, the birth-mother of her adopted child.
Kathryn was an only child and excelled in piano at an early age. At London Central Secondary, she met Jurgen Hornburg – a recent German immigrant. They went on to marry, have their son Jiri and lived in Kincardine. The family then moved to Weymouth, Nova Scotia where they adopted Sojy into the family.
From growing up in southern Ontario, to raising young children on the east coast, she then moved across the country to British Columbia in 1974. There she became a single parent and obtained a bachelor degree in Education from Simon Fraser University. Her children were still young and she again made many close friends in Burnaby.
As a university student (albeit at a relatively mature age of thirty) she needed to find summer employment. Kathryn did not have much outdoor experience other than cottage life in Ontario. But being in BC surrounded by mountains, wilderness adventure seemed appealing. She heard of a place on Vancouver Island near Campbell River that offered outdoor education programs. And they needed a cook that could bake bread. So off she went in her orange VW beetle to Strathcona Park Lodge, where she cooked, baked, led family adventure programs, and danced to Fleetwood Mac in the kitchen. It was just what she needed. She returned to enjoy life and work there for several summers in the 70’s.
Once she graduated from SFU, an opening at the elementary school in the village of Nakusp called to her. There she began her career in teaching. After eight years in the West Kootenays, she decided once again to broaden her horizons and pursue a Masters degree in Education from UBC in Vancouver.
She taught for several more years in Vancouver and resided in her Kitsilano apartment. Riding her bicycle to Granville Island and walking at Kits beach were some of her favorite activities. Her love of outdoor adventures continued with kayaking trips to the Queen Charlotte Islands, the Bahamas, and Baffin Island.
Her two granddaughters came along and she enjoyed spending time with them. Kathryn was known to make the best apple crisp and could whip up a roast chicken for any occasion.
Kathryn is survived by her son Jiri Hornburg, (Nathalie Lapierre) son Sojy Hornburg, (Jennifer Morris) and granddaughters Amélie and Anneliese.
Sadly, much of the precious time with her granddaughters was taken away by dementia in her later years. For the past ten years she has resided in care, where she died of natural causes.
Her family extends special thanks to the staff at the German-Canadian Care Home and the Three Links Care Centre. Kathryn wished to not have a funeral and a private celebration of life will take place at a later time.
