Mr. Kong Wing Wong

Kong Wing (Kenny) Wong was born on September 18, 1932 in Taishan, China. When he was four years old, his father Duck Chew returned to Canada to work, leaving behind his wife Choy Kam, Kenny and younger sister Jean. At 11 years old, Kenny moved to Taishan City by himself to attend middle school, and then to Hong Kong in 1949 to study at the World Electric Engineering College. In August 1951, sponsored by his father, he moved to Vancouver, BC, Canada, learned English in school and studied at the National Radio Institute. After he obtained his Canadian citizenship in 1952, he worked for Canadian Pacific (CP) Ferry (1952-1966), Hotel Vancouver (part-time) and took night school courses in construction-related work, cooking, and reflexology. He married his pen pal Yee Wah (Eva) on August 10, 1958 and lived in Chinatown for a few years before moving to the duplex on 20th and Main. He joined BC Ferries as their first Chief Cook for their inaugural Prince Rupert run, bringing many of his CP crew with him. He worked tirelessly between living on the ferries for 2 weeks and building houses on the other 2 weeks to provide for his 5 children, Lillian, Diana, Gary, Cynthia and Gene. In 1980, he finished building the house next door and moved his family of 7 in. He instilled strong work ethics and diligence to ensure all his children had post-secondary education and welcomed his sons-in-law Steven and Chris as his own.

He was active member of the Chinese Benevolent Society and Hon Hsing Athletic Club. He believed in “giving back to his Asian community” thus actively recruited others to obtain employment be it in BC Ferries, construction, gardening etc. He retired from BC Ferries in 1996 after 30 years.

After mom passed away (2007), Kenny spent his time on family, friends, gardening, karaoke, small construction projects, property managing, and going to church. At 80 years old, he accepted the Lord as His Savior and baptized 3 years later in September 2015. He enjoyed life and when his health started to decline, he bought a retirement condo at Opal Vancouver and was active in their food committee, recreation, gardening, billiards and even on a Opal Vancouver’s TV commercial advertisement. He cherished his time with his grandchildren Daniel, Nicole (Challen), Kimberly (Darion), Jarrett and Cameron and his great granddaughter Haven. They brought so much joy and fun to his life.

On July 8, 2026, he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He will always be remembered for his love of family and friends, life-long learner, handyman, business skills, humor, and prowess with darts and billiards. He helped and touched many lives and left his part of the world in better shape than when he entered…by any measure, a truly well-spent and successful life. We miss him dearly and he will be forever in our hearts.
