Kuen Seto Der

Kuen was born on May 27, 1931, in Chikan, Kaiping, Guangdong, China, to Don Choy Seto and Sue Hop Quon. She was the second of seven children. Her early years were marked by hardship, as her family was forced to flee their home several times during the Japanese invasion and later the political upheaval in China. Eventually, Kuen made her way to Macau, where she met Jack Der.

Kuen and Jack married in Hong Kong in 1952 and soon began their new life together in Canada. They settled in Dawson Creek, BC, where Kuen devoted herself to raising their six children, caring for the family, and helping with the family restaurant business. In later years, they continued working tirelessly in restaurant businesses in Penticton, BC and Port Coquitlam, BC. Finally, they retired and settled in a family home in Vancouver.

In retirement, Kuen and Jack enjoyed traveling, particularly cruises and trips to Asia with family and siblings. Kuen found great joy in cooking, gardening, sewing, and, most of all, spending time with her children, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was especially known for her delicious joong, dumplings, lo bak go, taro cakes, and her famous light-as-a-feather chiffon cake.

Kuen will always be remembered for her gentle nature, generosity, strength, and deep love for her family. She leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories and will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Kuen is survived by her children Lilly (Greg), Mary (Randy), Rose (Randy), George (Penny), Tom, and Linda (Andrew), brother Ken (Jeannie), sister Lauren (Philip), and sister-in-law (Doris), grandchildren Christine (Matt), Brad (Alisha), Rachel (Gus), Karre (Doug), Cameron (Marissa), Tylyn (Mark), Sarah, Jordan and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, in 2013.
