Loretta Yee, “Lan Dee,” was the only child born in Guangdong province, China to father Wee Yee and mother Mee Yin Yan Yee. She later moved to Hong Kong, where she married Chung Man Leung. In 1959, they had their first son, Kai Kwong (Peter) and in 1963, Kai Yui (Paul) was born. The family emigrated to Canada in December 1964 to start a new life and to reunite with relatives and her father, Wee Yee (1901-1970), who were all living in Vancouver.
Loretta found work as a seamstress in the sports apparel garment industry until she retired in 1993. She was a devout Catholic and attended St. Francis Xavier Church in Chinatown. And in her later years, she attended St. Patrick’s Parish as it was closer to home via transit.
Loretta managed to bring her mother to Canada in 1975 shortly before the premature passing of her husband Chung Man (1927-1977). So, single handedly, she raised her two boys and took care of both her mother Mee Yin (1903-1990) and her mother-in-law, Bik Wah Tam Leung (1897-1980), all under one household.
In 1997, her grandson Nicholas Benjamin Siu Loong Leung was born to her son Paul (1963-2018) and daughter-in-law Ginny Leung. And after school through his elementary school years, Loretta would look after Nicholas.
Loretta was also an avid gardener, often spending more time outside the house than inside. And when she could, in retirement, travelled on her own and with her family.
Loretta passed away, at home, in her favorite spot on the couch in the early morning of June 15, 2024. She is survived by her son Peter, grandson Nicholas and daughter-in-law Ginny. She was 95 and just five and a half months shy of 60 years living a wonderful life in Canada.
