Maria will always be remembered for her amazing home cooked meals, warm smile, big heart, and kind and caring nature - she was always trying to put a smile on the faces of everyone around her.
She is survived by her sister Vera, her children, Joe, Tony, Vera and Margie (Doug), her grandchildren, Ryan (Miranda) Susy (Francisco) Danny (Ellen) Amanda (Dylan) and Rory, her great grandchildren, Jacob, Francisco and Lainey, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Joseph, grandson, Dustin, and many siblings and family members.
Maria was born Sept. 4, 1938 in Petanjci, Slovenia into a large family of seven siblings. When she was just a teenager, she fled war-torn Yugoslavia with her brothers, Joe and Franc, and boarded a ship to Canada. Arriving in Montreal in 1957, she travelled by train to Vancouver, where she made her home for the rest of her life.
In her new city, Maria began working for Nat Bailey at White Spot. She met her husband shortly after, and married in 1960. Together, they had four children.
Maria is remembered by many for her service at the BC Cancer Research Centre, where she worked for 22 years. She retired in 2001 and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, crocheting, cooking amazing meals and lounging on the patio in the sun.
A funeral service will be held at Oceanview (4000 Imperial St, Burnaby) on Saturday March 21st from 1-2 p.m, followed by a reception from 2-4 p.m at the same location.
