It is with great sadness we announce the passing of beloved husband and father, Mark Yoo. On August 25, 2023, at the age of 53, he passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones after a decade long battle with MSA.
He is survived by his loving wife Jackie and son Malcolm, his parents Hyung Gill and Sook Ja, brother Richard (Lisa) and nieces and nephews.
After high school in Vancouver, Mark began his career in floor installation for many years. After injuring his back, he retrained to become a digital animator. He loved creating and animating on video games such as NBA Street, Need for Speed, SSX, Skate and Dead Rising to name a few. His passion in this field led him to work his way up to the position of animation director.
Unfortunately, in 2011 Mark started to feel ill and after years of testing, he was diagnosed with the rare degenerative disorder of Multiple System Atrophy. He fought the long and difficult battle with MSA with exceptional strength, resilience, courage, and willpower for over 10 years.
Mark loved his family fiercely and was extremely determined to stay with them as long as he could. He was a loyal and stubborn man with strong convictions who would do anything for his family and friends. While he may have appeared tough and intimidating, once you got to know him, you found that he had a big heart and was extremely kind. In his trademark style, he was always able to make everyone laugh with the many stories he shared and with his dry sense of humour.
Mark will be forever loved and remembered. We will miss him more than words can say.
Our family is grateful to know that Mark is finally at peace.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Davidicus Wong, Dr. Silke Cresswell, and Dr. Kevin Lu for their care and concern through the years. Also, thank you to the South community nurses (esp. Alice, Lev, Sachiko), Sean (OT), Janice (dietician) and all the home support workers that were a big part of our lives for many years supporting and caring for Mark.
If you would like to honour Mark’s memory, a donation can be made to a charity of your choice or Defeat MSA Canada at www.msacanada.ca
