Born on July 12, 1922 in Chiu Chow, Guangdong, China, Mary was the youngest child in a family of seven children. At the young age of 20, she married Peter Man Wang Cheng from her hometown. After the Second World War, they moved to Hong Kong and decided to settle there and raise their family. Mary was a kind and loving wife and mother. Her life was dedicated entirely to her husband and children. She took pleasure in the simplest things that came from the heart of her family member - a kiss, a hug, a warm smile, an expression of appreciation, a small surprise gift...that would be sufficient to make her day. In her old age, nothing would give her more joy than repeatedly looking through photos of all her great-grandchildren sent from Hong Kong and Houston. Family meant everything to Mary.
Mary was also a very pleasant and charming woman, always having a big warm smile on her face. Although she did not speak English, she was always friendly in saying "hello" to everyone she met on the road during her morning walks.
In 1995, Mary lost her loving husband to cancer. In 1996, she immigrated to Vancouver, BC, Canada for the love of her youngest newly born granddaughter, Gloria. While living in Vancouver, Mary always shared how much she enjoyed the fresh air and cool weather. During Easter of 1999, Mary was baptized at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Vancouver. She counted her blessings and thanked God for giving her such a happy, healthy and peaceful life.
Mary will always be remembered for her loving personality, patience, benevolent smile, and her handsewn clothing. At the age of 90, Mary's eyesight was still top-notch, allowing her to thread a needle without the help of any eyeglasses! Her children have always admired and appreciated her high-quality sewing skills growing up.
Mary is survived by her five children and their spouses: Graham Kam Yuen & Irene Cheng, Kam Wing & Eva Cheng, Maria Pui Yee Cheng, Katherina Po Yee Cheng & Eddy Chan, and Kam Hoi Cheng & Chui Ping Ling; nine grandchildren and their spouses: Scarlette Cheng & Comma Chan, Brian & Crystal Cheng, Dominic & Janet Cheng, Frank & Sara Cheng, Gloria Chan, Emilie Cheng & Johnny Rivera, Natalie Cheng, Tiffany Cheng, and Melanie Cheng; and seven great-grandchildren: Chloe, Cyrus, Reina, Riley, David, George, and Sophia. Mary will be fondly remembered by all of her family members.
