Mary Carmella Zanatta

Mary was the youngest of the five Barro sisters, all born and raised on Union Street in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood. Feisty to the end, Mary is survived by her sons, Tony (Jodi) and Roy (Asa); her granddaughter, Natalie; and her many nieces and nephews, including Joe, with whom who she worked with for many years.

Trained as a bookkeeper at a vocational school in the 1940s, Mary managed the accounts for various companies and family enterprises throughout her long career. She retired after 52 years and then devoted much of her time to the church and her hobbies. She offered counselling, hosted prayer groups and welcomed family and friends for dinners.

Mary was an avid gardener, card player and ceramic artist. She put her talents to use by restoring the statues displayed at Sacred Heart Church in Vancouver.

Mary touched many lives with her quick wit and strong convictions.

The family extends its sincere thanks to the staff of the Swedish Assisted Living Residence in Burnaby for their care and support.

A Catholic funeral service will be held on July 30, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 897 Keefer Street, Vancouver. Interment will follow at Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street Burnaby.
