Nean Oi was born on January 10, 1931 in Taishan, Guangdong, China. She was the second youngest of ten children in the Yee family. Nean Oi was predeceased by her husband, Hock Leng Tham, two sons, Kenneth and Anthony Tham, and her nine brothers and sisters.
Nean Oi moved to Calcutta, India when she was a teenager where she met and married Hock Leng and started and raised their family of four boys. After more than 25 years, in October 1975, Nean Oi immigrated to Canada and settled in Vancouver, British Columbia with her sons and their families.
Nean Oi had a beautiful spirit and she will be remembered as a friendly, kind and generous woman. She lived a fulfilling life and was often seen connecting and socializing with her family and friends, whether while hosting visitors at her home, over dim sum or at the local T&T supermarket. She was an avid mahjong player and also enjoyed an exciting horse race and slot game from time to time.
Nean Oi’s greatest joy was cooking – touching the hearts of her family with her delicious traditional homecooked Chinese meals – especially her mouthwatering Joong and flavourful taro cakes.
Nean Oi will be dearly missed by her loving family: sons, William and Thomas; daughters-in-law, Queenie and Jennifer; grandchildren, Christopher (Bonnie), Elaine (Richard), Felicia (Peter) and Nathan; and great-grandchildren, Skyler, Harrison, Cory, Emily, Blake, Willem and Darren.
