Born in Zhongshan, Guangdong, China, he immigrated to Burnaby with five of his siblings and parents. He met his wife-to-be via family friends in 1974, and wed soon after in 1975. Within a year, they welcomed a new addition to the family, their firstborn son Charles.
Raymond was hardworking, trustworthy, and always enjoyed learning from others. He became a lifelong entrepreneur, starting with a grocery business. From there, he met business contacts and partners and built multiple businesses selling and distributing produce before “supply chain” was even a business concept.
Raymond loved beautiful cars, motivated by the moment he was picked up by the Yen family in a classic Chevrolet on his arrival to Vancouver. He saved his earnings from his first jobs and was proud to purchase a Chevrolet Oldsmobile of his own.
Raymond loved eating, and fish was one of his favourite foods. Sashimi (NOT sushi), braised, steamed, in soups, fried - if it was fish, he loved it! He would send his children pictures of fish that he was enjoying from his travels, and once remarked on a family vacation to an aquarium, “oh that one’s tasty” “that one is good in hot pot…” “oh, I had that in China!”
Dad always loved playing ping pong, and reinvigorated this interest mid-life. He wound up losing inches of belly fat with this hobby; in our opinion, he was a bit of a sore loser as well as a sore winner, so he would continue playing for hours in his prime.
During his retirement he enjoyed ping pong, reconnecting with old classmates, seeing family and old friends - over a delicious meal of course! As well, he would make sure to take leisurely walks around his neighborhood and pointing out buses and fire trucks to his grandson.
Sadly, Raymond had a rapid decline starting at the end of 2023 due to a cancerous sarcoma. We were blessed in this time to care for our husband, father, brother and friend and to speak to him in his last weeks.
Raymond is survived by his wife Margaret, three children, Charles, Jessica and Sarah, and grandson, Alexander.
He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
