Ruby passed away peacefully at Laurel Place Hospice at the age of 84 with her daughter by her side. Predeceased by her husband (Winston) and son (Terry), she is survived by her children Stacey and April, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, brother Thomas (Betty); HK aunt Mee Fan; sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; cousins; many dear nieces and nephews; and special friends.
The daughter of Annie & Kee Lam, Ruby was born in Vancouver on February 21, 1938. She grew up in Vancouver attending Strathcona & Simon Fraser Elementary and graduated from King Edward High School in 1957. She met and married Winston in 1966. They had three children, April, Terry, and Stacey.
Ruby worked as a secretary for Harry James Agencies until she and Winston went on to open restaurants (The Pagoda in New Westminster & Bamboo Kitchen in Surrey). They worked hard to provide their family with the comforts of life. After leaving the restaurant business, she went to work for Lawson Oates Chrysler in the early 1970s until her retirement in 2000. Ruby was widowed in 1981, when Winston passed away from cancer.
During her retirement, she loved to travel, going to the casino, knitting, watching movies, dining out and playing mahjong with friends. After her son Terry unexpectedly passed away in 2011, she went to live with Stacey and her family in Delta. Ruby was always an amazing knitter and joined the Kennedy Seniors Center where she put her lifelong hobby of knitting to good use, knitting hundreds of baby hats for the BC Children’s Hospital. Ruby had no limits to her love. Friends and family who came to her house were always greeted with a welcoming smile and big hugs. She was loved by all her friends and family and will be profoundly missed.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Renal Unit at Surrey Memorial where Ruby went 3 times a week for dialysis for the last two years. We offer our heartfelt gratitude for their tireless work, especially when they were faced with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She was always talking about the exceptional care she received from everyone in the unit and their care for her safety and well-being. We would also like to thank the incredible staff at Laurel Place Hospice, as well as the nurses and doctors at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
Funeral Service will be held at Forest Lawn Chapel (3789 Royal Oak Ave) on Wednesday, June 1st at 1-2:30pm followed by interment graveside in the Legacy Garden. Viewing will be Tuesday, May 31st 7:30–9:30pm in Forest Lawn Funeral Home’s Viewing Room. Reception to follow at a different location.
