Our most treasured memories of Sam are our shared family vacations. Our trips were always filled with fun and laughter. Sam was always cheerful, chatting up everyone he came into contact with, and on occasion, including total strangers he had befriended into our circle, which made our trips more enjoyable.

We will miss having more adventures with Sam, but will forever remember his positive, uplifting outlook toward life and generous spirit.


Uncle Sammy . . .  there are so many great words that I can use to describe you . . . intelligent, funny, creative, adventurous, and loving.   Most simply you were always there willing to give a lending hand anytime.  

You were a  genuine and caring man that always brought joy and happiness in people’s lives.  Your outgoing spirit was infectious, and everyone wanted to be part of your conversations.  

I enjoyed all the time and moments spent with you starting when you,  Auntie Mary, Uncle Carl and Auntie Marion came to visit the family in Okinawa.   In Vancouver, I loved all the outings I experienced with you as a young girl to my teenage years which   included the Canucks games, movies, plenty of food excursions with the family and you being a chaperone to my first few concerts!   Last,  I appreciated your family visits to Los Angeles to spend time with Blair, Natalie and myself. 

Thank you for being a great uncle - your encouragement and great words of advice, I will never forget.

Sam’s “big heart”, warm presence and infectious smile made it effortless for our family to feel welcome and special. Our family met Sam and his family after both of our families relocated to Ottawa in 1990. It must have been fate to have found our homes within a 10-minute walk from each other. 

For two years, we were fortunate to spend time with the Wongs exploring our new surroundings. Trevor and Derek who were only 9 and 10 at the time became protectors of our daughter Alicia who was only a year old. We have many happy memories of shared meals and celebrations together. We would often pile into the Wong’s blue Caravan for our next adventure, which included the search for the best Chinese restaurant. 

After Sam’s family returned to Vancouver, we would “catch up” during our family’s annual trip to Vancouver. We would reminisce about their time spent in Ottawa and exchange stories about our families. Sam entertained us with countless stories about his family who were his pride and joy.  

His legacy will continue with Trevor and Derek, who have grown up to be exceptional young men. 

We are forever grateful to have known Sam and will miss him dearly. 

It is difficult to find words to express the deep sadness in my heart for the loss of my dear brother, Sam (whom I called “Gobble”). There is a huge void in my world without him. No one could ask for a better brother or best friend who has always been there for me and my family. I will always be thankful for our close relationship.

We shared so much ….… family, friends, happy and sad times, chats, “field trips”, vacations, memorable meals and food experiences, the list goes on and on. There are countless precious memories which I will treasure. I only wish we could have created more.

Gobble, I love you and miss you immensely. I think of you every single day. You are forever in my thoughts and my heart.

Uncle Sammy, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was one of the most welcoming, friendly, positive and generous human beings I've had the pleasure of knowing.

Before I married into the family, Uncle Sammy was one of the first to welcome me in and made me feel like one of their own right away. Coming from a small family myself, and knowing that I'd be joining a very large one (both the Yip and Wong sides!), he made it very easy on me. Little did I know, it was the fact that I could eat like a Yip/Wong that garnered the stamp of approval!

Everybody knew how much Uncle Sammy cherished his time with family, especially his grand-children, Hailey and Tyler. That same joy he had in playing with them naturally transferred over to his interactions with our daughter, Maya. My one wish is that Uncle Sammy could have met our son, Kieran, born shortly after his passing. He definitely would have gravitated towards his infectious personality and likely go toe-to-toe on the eating front!

Uncle Sammy, thank you for the positive influence you've had on me, for the life lessons you've imparted, and for your big, welcoming heart.

The memories of you will live on forever, and we'll be sharing them with our kids for years to come! You will be deeply missed!

Our Eulogy for Uncle Sammy

Hello everyone, Lisa and I (Shannon) are honoured to speak about our Uncle Sammy today and to share some of our favourite memories of him.  We know that he was a very special person to so many people.  To us, Uncle Sammy was the best uncle anyone could ask for, for so many reasons. 

Everyone that knew Uncle Sammy would describe him as cheerful and friendly.  He had an approachable and jovial nature that made people around him feel welcome and at ease.  Because of his vibrant energy, he often attracted strangers whom he would chat with and find out all about their life stories.  As an uncle, he always greeted us with a big smile and a warm hug.  He was always happy to see us and we loved our conversations with him.  It always felt good to be in Uncle Sammy’s presence.  Whenever we were with Uncle Sammy and Auntie Mary, we felt so taken care of and loved.  In many ways, their home became our second home. 

Uncle Sammy loved to joke around; he had a sense of humour and playfulness, and an infectious laugh. Growing up, we always told him his jokes were “so corny” but I (Shannon) loved them.  In his affectionate and fun manner, he often greeted me as “Shannon-si-bob” and I would call him “Uncle Sam-in-si-bob” in return.  

Our family went on several vacations with Uncle Sammy, Auntie Mary, Trevor and Derek.  On many of these trips, it was usually Uncle Sammy who woke us kids up in the morning.  We loved how he would start with his signature knock at the door and then followed with saying “Jo Sun, Jo Sun” which means “good morning” in Cantonese while clapping his hands.  He soon shortened this greeting to “J.S., J.S”, which made us laugh.  To this day, we still fondly remember this morning wake-up routine that we loved.

Uncle Sammy often took videos on our family vacations.  On our trip to the Maritimes, we went to Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia. While we stood in front of the lighthouse, Uncle Sammy used the video camera to try to make us look like our bodies were stretching upwards and growing taller and taller.  I (Shannon) remember clearly how much we loved it, how it almost seemed like magic to me, and how much we laughed as we crowded around him and the video camera as he showed us what he was trying to do.  He always made things so much fun for us as kids.

I (Shannon) also have an appreciation of oldies music that I probably wouldn’t have if it weren’t for Uncle Sammy.  I remember many road trips with Uncle Sammy enthusiastically singing along to his beloved oldies tunes, like “The Platters”.  Now, when I put music on in the car for Leah and Tara, I'll often put on oldies music, and I know it's because of him.

Uncle Sammy was a steady, dependable fixture in our lives, someone we could always count on.  No matter how busy he was, he always made the time to help us and teach us things.  There are so many things we learned from him.

Uncle Sammy taught us how to change a flat tire and how to check and fill the oil in our car. We still remember being with him in our carport while he showed us how to use the jack.  He even gave us a couple manuals on Car Care and Roadside Emergencies to keep in our car.  We still have these manuals in our glove compartments.  This is just one example of the many ways Uncle Sammy always looked out for us. 

When I (Lisa) was ten or eleven, Uncle Sammy taught me how to ride a bike.  He came over for an afternoon and taught me how to ride in our cul-de-sac.  He was patient and encouraging in his upbeat manner.  When I was shaky and having difficulty finding my balance, he said in his cheerful voice, over and over, “who’s driving ‘dis bus?!”.

Growing up, I (Lisa) was often decorating my room with things I bought from IKEA.  Uncle Sammy would always come over to help me hang things up in my room, bringing his tools and teaching me how to use them (like how to use a power drill and how to use drywall anchors).  When I got better at doing things myself, he was always happy to lend me his tools whenever I asked.

One evening while we were at home, a bird flew into our house and couldn’t find its way out. It kept flying and fluttering around quickly from one room to the next.  You can imagine the panic Mom, Lisa, and I (Shannon) were in, as well as the bird! It was late at night but Mom called Uncle Sammy and he came over right away to help.

More than being helpful and someone we could count on, Uncle Sammy had such a generous, giving nature, and constantly supported us.  He always included us as part of his family which we are incredibly thankful for.  

This meant inviting us on many of their big family vacations.  Uncle Sammy and Auntie Mary also took us to Whistler, almost every other weekend during ski season. On one of these ski trips, I (Lisa) broke my arm skiing down the mountain. Uncle Sammy drove my mom and I back to Children’s Hospital in Vancouver and made sure we were both OK and taken care of.

Uncle Sammy and Auntie Mary always supported Lisa and I (Shannon) growing up.  They attended our year-end dance and piano recitals year after year, even though it was probably a little painful to endure that many hours of very amateur dancing.

Uncle Sammy always offered to pick up Mom, Lisa and I (Shannon) to drive us to family gatherings and events, which were frequent in our family.  I cannot even count how many times he picked us up but there were so many while we were growing up.  We fondly remember waiting for Uncle Sammy’s blue minivan, or “Big Blue” as Uncle Sammy called it, to pull into our driveway and then piling into the van.  It felt like a fun mini road trip together wherever we went; a familiar routine. 

Even as we grew up and had children of our own, Uncle Sammy continued to be the best uncle to us.  Everyone knew that he loved children and lit up whenever he was around them.  He was a wonderful grandpa and a great grand-uncle to our kids.  Whenever we were out for dinner, if Maya was fussing, Uncle Sammy would be the first to get up from the table and carry her around the restaurant so that Don and I (Lisa) could finish eating.  Kids were enamoured with Uncle Sammy because of his warm-heart and attentiveness; he was fully engaged whenever he spent time with them.

Now that we’re adults, we realize how fortunate we were to have an uncle like Uncle Sammy: so warm, caring, loving, generous of himself and supportive of us.  

Uncle Sammy, we are deeply grateful for you and everything you have done for us.  Thank you for helping create some of our happiest childhood memories, for including us as part of your family and for caring for us.  You mean so much to us; we know how truly lucky we are to have you as our uncle.  We love you and we’ll miss you dearly, more than you will ever know.  You will always be in our memories and our hearts.


During our childhood, Sammy (aka Gobble) took the job of being our Big Brother seriously, and worked tirelessly to give us siblings a better life.  He wore many hats, i.e. he was our mentor, teacher, financial consultant, driving instructor, chauffeur, advisor…and the list goes on.  Not many people knew this, but at the ripe old age of 15, he also took on the position of CEO at a bank. (Okay, it was self-appointed, and it was the “Bank of Home.”  This “company” consisted of 5 “clients”, one being the CEO.)

Gobble generously and lovingly shared his knowledge, time, experiences, and friends with us.  He was the voice of reason, and no matter how busy or hard his own life was, he always had time for us.  For all of this, I am forever grateful.

I will think of him, miss him, and mourn him always.

Words can’t express what you’ve meant to me. You’re my hero, my mentor, my captain, my friend, and most importantly my dad. It’s hard to think about life without you and all the experiences and memories we wanted to have together. I know you’re in a better place now without pain, and my life won’t go on without you always being part of it. You were my role model on how to live a life of kindness, community, and the importance of looking after others, and I will continue the positive path I saw you living everyday.  I love you Ba and can’t wait to meet you again in my dreams ❤️

Goodbye Dad. My heart will forever be broken. To the greatest man I know, and to many a beacon of warmth, friendship, hospitality, and love. You will forever be remembered. I’m so proud to know you’ve had a positive impact on so many. Your smile alone is etched into the life stories of the countless people you met along the way. You are my best friend forever and always. Everything and everywhere reminds me of you. Thank you for giving me so much. And to imagine, as wonderful as you were as a loving, approachable Dad, you truly super-sized being the best Grandpa to the next level. Your love and contributions to the hearts and souls of Hailey and Tyler will shine on and on. I hope they do great things and make you beam with pride as you sit in your big armchair way up high watching, cheering, guiding, and protecting them along the way. While I’m sad that your time with them was cut short far sooner than you deserved, my heart is full that you got to spend so much quality time with them during your favourite childhood age. I no longer have any fears in this world,  I feel your presence  next to me every moment of every day. Keep our family table reserved until we meet again. I love you Dad.

I have had the privilege to cut Sams hair and call him a friend for so many years. 
He always had many wonderful stories and laughs to share with us. He spoke so proudly of all his family and always had stories and pictures to show us so we would feel included in everyone’s journey.  We feel blessed to have known Sam, this special man and the wonderful family he belongs to.  Our thoughts are with you all at this time and know his laughter and smile will  fill our memories of him always.

Sam was a great guy!  I first met him at UBC when we were both in Commerce Faculty. Unbeknownst to us we were both hired by Cook Burt Chartered Accountants. When we both arrived at their Downtown Vancouver office we were pleasantly surprised that we were both starting on the same day. We have stayed friends all these years. Pam and I attended a number of events in Sam’s life and he introduced us to Dim sum. As he and Mary raised their children and worked at their careers, we kind of lost touch but later in his time with CRA he spent a day shadowing me to see how people in private industry operated. Since then we both retired and made an effort to connect at least on a yearly basis. I always enjoyed our lunches with him and Mary. He was always so upbeat and excited about life and what was coming next .  I will surely miss him!!

It’s been 60 years since I met Sam. We grew up in Chinatown and had similar backgrounds. At the time, I didn’t realize how strong and close of a friendship we would develop. 

We first met in grade 7 and became part of the same circle of friends in grade 8. Unfortunately, we lost touch for about 3 years after that because we went to different high schools. However, fate intervened, and we both ended up working for Woodward’s in the produce department. We grew closer, and this was when I discovered one of Sam’s many fine qualities – generosity. 

His parents’ home quickly became our home base and my frequent snack spot as well. He would invite me over to eat before / after going out. His family were always accepting of me even when I would coincidentally go over uninvited just before mealtimes. This was when I also witnessed his filial piety as he would always include them in our conversations. 

We became such good friends along with Steve Kennedy that we planned a trip to Europe together. The friendship and bond we had helped us through some adventurous times. I have so many wonderful memories to share, but that would take up a book. 

Through our many discussions over the years, I know Sam would not want his family and friends to be sad for him. He had achieved all that he wanted in a family with a loving wife and sons he was very proud of. 

The last thing I want to share is that Sam was there to support me in many of my major life decisions. Thank you, Sam for being my good friend and brother. 

My deepest condolences to Mary, Trevor, Derek and all his loved ones.

I was lucky to grow up with the Wong family and Sam was like a father figure to me. I always remember him as being happy, kind, and welcoming, even sometimes affectionately referring to me as his third son! He was always a staple at countless school events, neighbourhood gatherings, cub scout meets, and hockey games, heavily involved in enriching not just his own children’s upbringing but the many others that came up with them. We were always welcome in the Wong home. I particularly remember getting introduced to new foods and cuisines that my own family never ate, and he never got too upset when me & Trevor ate all of his smoked oysters. As years passed and the gatherings became less frequent as we grew up and moved away and got families of our own, I’d occasionally bump into him at Sylvia’s barbershop or selling his cruises on Burnaby Heights. I was always greeted with that familiar smile. He would be ready to crack some jokes and eagerly fill me in on the latest goings on with the family and especially his grandchildren that he loved so passionately. My sincerest condolences to Trevor, Derek & the entire Wong family. I hope you can find some comfort in all the lives he touched and the wonderful memories that will live on. I’ll miss you “Dad” RIP.

 I am so very sorry to hear about Sam. I will always treasure our families 'growing up' together in the Forest Grove neighbourhood. I especially remember Sam's kindness to all, his patience leading all you hooligans in Cubs, his fun at backyard family fireworks, his fine leadership on the Cub committee, knowing Sam and Mary were nearby was reassuring if our roaming kids needed help. Sam always had a smile and a gentle word, a reasoned voice and good advice. Sam made the world a better place, and the best was founding his fine family. Sam was a fine example to everyone of how to live a contributing life to his community and family. You have a wonderful legacy to carry forward and so many happy memories to comfort you. My condolences to your entire family, Sam will be greatly missed. Peggy Gish and family.

I was devastated to hear of Sam’s passing. I knew him when I was a teenager, but I didn’t truly get to know him until I was an adult and had a family of my own. 

Among his many gifts, Sam was wonderful with children. He had a way of being totally present when he was talking to a little one, even if he was being subjected to a three minute yarn about Paw Patrol. It was no coincidence that our kids warmed to Sam (and Mary) more than any of our other friends’ parents. 

I was privileged to see Sam play with his grandkids. You could see how much they lit up his life, and how much he enjoyed seeing the world through his eyes. I hope someday they will be able to appreciate how lucky they were to have Sam in their lives, even if it wasn’t for nearly long enough. 

My favourite single memory of Sam was chatting with him on the morning of a Ride to Conquer Cancer as Derek ran around organizing the team. We were right next to the buffet breakfast table that was reserved for riders only. Over the course of 45min, Sam *demolished* that buffet. There was no buffet that could contain Sam Wong at the height of his powers. 

I was one of the many teens who would come over all the time to hang out.   The Wong house was always the most welcoming place and you would always be greeted with a smile from Mr. Wong at all hours of the night.  I have not seen him in quite a long time but his impact on all of the lives of those teens that got to know him back in the day will never be forgotten and I'm incredibly grateful for it.

Mrs Wong, Derek, Trevor, and all of the Wong family - I'm was so sorry to hear that Mr Wong left this world far too soon. Like so many others have mentioned, Mr. Wong, Mrs. Wong, and the Wong home was such an important part of my childhood/highschool life. Mr Wong had a special way of warmly inviting us into the home and making us feel like we belonged there as part of the extended family. As someone with no relatives living in Canada, I was always envious of the incredibly loving and large family that Derek and Trevor grew up with; and I understand that Mr Wong played an important part in creating that very special environment. It was inspiring to see  one person foster so much love amongst those around him, and it's something I will continue to be inspired by.

We are so sorry for your loss. From your pictures throughout the years, we can tell what an amazing, all-star grandpa he was! Everyone will remember the good times with uncle Sam and we will miss his hospitality and big, warm, inviting smile at summer barbecues. Take care of mom and the family. ❤️❤️❤️ We are thinking of you.

I’m so sorry to hear this news. I have so many fond memories of your dad! He was always joyful, and spread so much positivity.  He was so welcoming, and made us feel like family when we were around (probably because we were usually crashing your family events). He was such a great family man and I know he will be missed! Huge hugs to your family! 

I worked at CRA from 1984 until my retirement in 2011. Many times I would sit with Sam in the bus to and from work. We shared many a laugh over life and politics at the office. He was very bright and astute. I learned shortly after joining CRA that he was the brother of Marion, who was my co-worker at my previous job at McAfee, Lilly and Co.
Moreover, he was a devoted family man and possessed solid values. This I observed from bumping into Sam and his family at Forest Grove School - my daughter Shanna and Derek were classmates there. 
I was very saddened to hear of his passing from a former CRA co-worker. He was a cheerful, nice guy with a ready smile and he’s left us too soon.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I'm very fortunate to have had a long friendship with Sam. We first met at Woodwards Grocery Store as teenagers. Through the latter part of high school and all through university, we worked together and formed a strong friendship in the produce department. After high school, we both attended UBC and had many classes together, in addition to spending a lot of time playing pool together in the student union building. Before we graduated university, we decided to take a summer off to travel Europe (along with Shawn Ho). One of the highlights that we always talked about was in Paris when the rather eccentric hotel proprietor would walk the hallways at night in a white lab coat! 
Sam and I both joined accounting firms in Vancouver, and I was lucky enough to be invited on a ski trip organized by his firm. I put on skis for the first time and fell in love with the sport all thanks to that first introduction! Given that we liked skiing so much, we decided to build a cabin at the base of Mt. Baker. I drove by a couple of years ago, and the cabin is still standing. In addition to our ski trips, Sam and I would get together with friends once a month for poker games. 
Even after I moved to Washington, Sam and I continued to stay in touch. When Sam got transferred to Ottawa for work, my wife, daughters, and I took a trip there to visit him, Mary, and the boys, and they also came to visit us many times on San Juan Island and at our home in Chelan. 
After Sam became a cruise agent for Expedia, he became our "go-to" guy for many fun trips. We were also fortunate to do a fall colors New England cruise with both Sam and Mary, and they got to spend time with our family in Boston. 
These memories I've shared only scratch the surface of many wonderful times we had together. We will miss Sam very much. I think about him each day.  Thank you to Derek for keeping us informed during such a difficult time. We are so sorry for your loss, and we wish we could be at the funeral. 


There are so many wonderful memories that come flooding back when I think about my teenage years spent in the Wong home.  Mr. and Mrs. Wong were the most welcoming parents one could ever imagine.  Mr. Wong would always greet everyone with his infectious smile, and was always willing to take the time to chat and catch up.   As unruly teens, we would spend hours in his basement until the wee hours of the night, playing video games or watching South Park.  Before Mr. Wong went to bed, he would always come to say goodnight - because he was that thoughtful, kind, and wonderful person.  I always felt so connected to his home.

I remember bringing my son to the Wong home when he was just a toddler, and Mr. Wong was so excited to connect and play with him.  He brought out some old toys and patiently waited for my son to warm up to him.  In no time, they were off and playing together.  His warmth and gentle way of being was a sight to behold.  In those moments, I thought, "his future grandchildren are going to be so lucky."  And of course, they were.  He was so proud of his grandchildren, and always had a funny story to share about them every time we bumped into each other.  

As teens, we were always joking that Mr. Wong was a secret agent or a spy - his minivan being his cover.  His kindness and smile would be disarming to the bad guys, and his wit would would win over every time.  In so many ways, he was a hero for his family.  He will be so dearly missed, but the  fond memories of Mr. Wong will surely live on.

To Trev, Derek, Mrs. Wong, and family - my deepest condolences for your loss.  May you find peace in the tremendous and exuberant life he lead, and the memories of love and greatness that was Mr. Wong.

Big Heart. It is what Mr. Wong's middle name means and there is not a better way to describe him. I was lucky enough to spend many hours in his home, sitting around the Wong kitchen table to share a meal or simply chat with Mr. Wong about all things under the sun while he drank a cup of tea, his hands usually wrapped around the steaming mug. His family had become like my second one for a short while, which I still often fondly think of throughout the years.  He was calm, soft-spoken and welcomed everyone into his home. If you were lucky enough to be friends with Trevor and/or Derek, then you spent hours upon hours in their basement watching movies, playing video games and simply having a good time.  

As family was always at the forefront for Mr. Wong, back in the day, he could usually be found at a niece of nephew's birthday party or family dinner on weekends. There, the adults would sit around the dinner table talking for hours while the kids played. I loved these family events and all the aunts and uncles and grandparents and cousins gathered there. I will always be grateful to have been a part of them.

There is not one favourite memory for me of Mr. Wong, but rather, it's the warmth, patience and time that he and Mrs. Wong gave me that I deeply cherish and will never forget. I cannot emphasize how truly special they are to me. 

To Mrs. Wong, Trevor and Derek and to the rest of the family:  I am so, so sorry for your loss. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and I hope your memories of Mr. Wong bring you comfort and peace to face the days ahead.

Mr Wong was such an amazing man and I fondly remember hanging out for hours at their home during a time when being at home for myself was difficult.  One memory I still have was that he once gave me a puzzle that was in a drawer and challenged me to solve it.  He said not one could figure it out and that I should give it a try.  I spent hours trying to figure it out but when I got it I remember him smiling and praising me.  It may not seem like much but I didn’t receive much praise from my dad so it meant a lot to me.  Thank you Mr Wong and family for making me feel safe in your home.  Rest In Peace and your life has been truly blessed.
