Shirley Sam (nee Wong) passed away at her home in Vancouver on March 23, 2020 at 83 years. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Stephen; her five children, Selina (Jackson Wu), Karen (John Leong), Georgina, Janet and Derek; and her four grandchildren, Sarah, Kaitlin, Hannah and Dennis. Shirley is also survived by her brother, Gary Wong (Sharon) and their family, and her sister, Susan (Roger Lane). She was predeceased by her parents, Hong Ging Wong and Louie Shee Wong. Born in China, Shirley arrived in Vancouver in 1950 where she attended high school and then studied nursing in Sardis. Upon marriage in 1958 she became partner in her husband Stephen’s drycleaning and alterations businesses for the next 34 years. Shirley enjoyed travelling, ballroom dancing, playing mah-jong, and was a fan of Princess Diana and Roger Federer. Her greatest passion by far, however, was her family. Shirley’s fun and love for all things children and grandchildren will never be forgotten, as well as her incredible strength and generosity. She is a most beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Due to the current conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, a private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
