It is with great sadness that the family of Sum Fong Louie (雷深熀) announces his peaceful passing on Friday, November 19, 2021, shortly after an unexpected stroke on Remembrance Day. He was 101 years young. Many of his children and grandchildren flew in from overseas to be at his bedside during his last hours.
Sum Fong was born in Toi Shan County, Guangdong Province in China to his parents, Fat Chu Louie and Shui Kam Lee. Sum Fong was the older brother of two sons.
Sum Fong was a renowned craftsman of wood, learned his trade in the Philippines before World War II and owned a furniture business in Manila. After the war, he joined his family in Hong Kong where he started a successful retail store business. In 1973, he immigrated with his entire family to Vancouver, Canada with hopes of building a better future for his children. He provided for his family in his newly adopted country by working as a master cabinet-maker until his retirement in 1981. Due to his unwavering support, many of his descendants went on to become doctors, pharmacists, engineers, pilots, lawyers, accountants, scientists, musicians, artists, successful business owners and pillars of society. In retirement, Sum Fong explored the world visiting exotic locales throughout Asia, the Americas and the Caribbean islands. He was often accompanied on his travels by his family. He had time to renew his mastery of Chinese chess, besting many of his opponents. From time to time, Sum Fong may have indulged in games of chance in Chinatown with friends or at home with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Siu Yin, of 81 years and his brother, Sum Man. He has seven devoted daughters: Dale, Nancy, Linda, Natalie, Josephine, Louisa and Annette and two adoring sons, Dan and Michael. He also leaves behind twenty-three beautiful grandchildren: Wendi, Gary, Sandra, Laura, Harry, Lisa, Donna, Audrey, Julie, Stephanie, Jeremy, Adrian, Cyra, Tricia, Lukas, Dudley, Johannes, Josiah, Jadon, Mikayla, Ryan, Dayna, Devon and twenty precious great-grandchildren: Caitlin, Shannon, Yi-Yong, Yi-Xiong, Yi-Quan, Madison, Lexie, Brendan, Gavin, Tristan, Amelia, Severine, Aidan, Catherine, Nicholas, Claire, Paige, Ashton, Reece and Arielle.
The visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 1ST, 2021 at 7:30-9:30 PM and prayer service and Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 2nd at 10:00 AM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 3790 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby, BC, V5G 3M1.
