Vernon Kwok Shing Lum

Vernon Harding Lum was born as Kwok Shing in Vancouver, BC on October 12, 1925. His Father is “Charlie “Lum Foon Ting who came to Canada in 1898 and his Mother is Mrs. Lum Foon Ting (Lee Ah See) who came in 1918. He was born in Chinatown and was raised in the Family home on 336 East Pender Street.

Vernon is predeceased by his elder siblings: Violet, Victor, Eva and is survived by his younger sister Dixie. He attended Central School for his primary education and graduated from Vancouver Technical School in 1944. He completed Grade 13 at Britannia High School in 1945; excelling in Mathematics.

He trained for the Canadian Army Reserve but never served as the War ended in 1945. Instead, he pursued a career as a restauranteur; and in partnership with his brother, Victor, they established the legendary “Hong Kong Café”

Vernon met the love of his life; his surviving wife, Ellen Lum, in 1944 and they married in 1947. He is dearly missed by his six children; Denny (Tomoko), Garry (Barbara), Donald, Norman (Ann), Becky (Hubert), Melanie (Janos), and ten grandchildren; Chris (Aryannah), Sean (Paulia), Shawna (Lucas), JJ, Gregory, Dominic, Heston (Charing) Jordan, Vaughn, and Troy. He is further blessed with five great grandchildren: Pheonix, Beckham, Raika, Alyssa, Leo and one more on the way. Beloved mention to the many nieces and nephews in Vancouver and around the world.

Vernon was well known for his radiant smile which echoed a rare kindness and gentleness. His whole world centred around his Family and that was reflected in the warm, cozy home that he created for them. The house was embellished with his expert carpentry and gardening. His creative talents extended to musical instruments he crafted and wonderful jewellery creations that his girls proudly wear.

He was a man of few words but his heart spoke volumes. We will miss him dearly but forever hold him close in our thoughts and in our hearts.
