It is with sadness we announce the passing of Wah Chiu (John) Eng on January 11, 2020. He passed away unexpectedly at the age of 81 and is survived by his wife, Sun Oy, his children: May (Clement), Nancy (Phil), Joyce, Gordon and Lisa (Lawrence); and his grandchildren: Alison, Heather, Ryan, Kayla and Sophia.
John was born in Toisan, Guangdong, China and travelled from Toisan to Hong Kong, then to Hazelton in Northern BC and Vancouver in the 1960’s. He had exceptional chef abilities and an excellent palate in fine dining cuisine, comfort foods and western Chinese dishes and was well known for his many incredible dishes. He was the owner and chef at the successful Rose Bud Café in Burnaby and was the executive chef at the Wigwam Inn at the top of the Indian Arm.
John was also active in the Chinese and local community and was a member of the Ing Suey Sun Tong Association. He knew many people throughout the Lower Mainland and he enjoyed talking with people and was caring in many ways that continued up until his passing. He worked hard throughout his life to provide for his family and in his retirement years he stayed busy proudly growing numerous fig trees. He left us too soon but we know that it was his time.
A private family service was held on January 17, 2020.
