Winnie Hie Yun Chan

Winnie Hie Yun Chan (陳秦喜雲) was Born in Jakarta, Indonesia on March 6, 1935 and died on April 19, 2021 at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her husband Daniel Chee Chan(陳熾 1922-2010).

She grew up in Indonesia during turbulent times. From a young age, she was relied upon heavily to care for her nine younger siblings. As economic conditions improved during peacetime, she sought a new life in Hong Kong where she met Daniel. They married in 1962 and moved to Taiwan during the 1970's. They both shared a love for travel. She carefully documented their journeys in photo albums complete with travel itineraries and ticket stubs.

They immigrated to Vancouver, BC in 1985 and later moved to Burnaby where she spent her twilight years amongst her community in the Metrotown neighbourhood.

Winnie was a masterful cook, specializing in an assortment of Chinese and Southeast Asian cuisines. She gave generously of her time and talents to the Vancouver International Buddhist Progress Society (溫哥華佛光山) as a volunteer and culinary instructor. She was recognized for her efforts in 2001, the United Nations' International Year of the Volunteer.

Her presence will be greatly missed by friends and family.
