Yuk Guy Lee was born on July 22, 1931, in China. He and his older brother, Yuk Kwan, were raised primarily by their mother, whom he deeply respected and loved. He was always grateful for her resourcefulness, strength, and hard work in raising the two brothers.
A gifted and dedicated student, Guy was the top student at school for many years, earning free tuition for his academic achievements. This early success fostered a lifelong curiosity and love of learning.
At the age of 19, Guy and his brother moved to Hong Kong. In November 1955, he arrived in Canada, where he built a life rooted in community, family, and service. He became a lifelong member and leader of the Hing Mee Kee Loo Society, an organization with which he remained deeply involved throughout his life.
He was a devoted husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. To many, he was affectionately known as Uncle Guy, or Guy Sook. More than just a name, it reflected the special place he held in the hearts of so many.
Guy always had a newspaper nearby, a welcoming smile on his face, and his finest grey slacks on—even for a weekly family dinner. He took the time to learn the proper pronunciation of everyone’s name, met every gesture with a heartfelt “thank you,” and never seemed to lose his remarkably sharp memory.
He had a quiet way of making people feel seen, remembered, and welcome. He is deeply missed.
